After the pandemic, tipping has seen a significant increase in many countries. As restaurants and other service industries have struggled to recover from the economic downturn caused by the lockdowns and restrictions, customers have been more generous with their gratuities. However, this has sparked a debate over whether tipping should be calculated on the pre-tax or post-tax amount of a bill.

There are arguments for both sides of this issue. Those who believe tipping should be based on the pre-tax amount argue that taxes are not a reflection of the service provided by the staff. The tax amount is determined by the government and is not something that the servers have control over. Therefore, they argue that tipping on the pre-tax amount ensures that the servers are fairly compensated for the service they provided.

On the other hand, those who believe tipping should be based on the post-tax amount argue that the final bill that the customer sees includes the tax amount, so it makes sense to tip on that total. They argue that tipping on the post-tax amount is more straightforward and easier for customers to calculate. Additionally, tipping on a higher amount can help to provide more support to the employees who have been struggling during the pandemic.

Ultimately, the decision on whether to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount is up to the individual customer. Some may choose to tip based on the pre-tax amount as a way to ensure that servers are fairly compensated for their work, while others may opt to calculate their tip based on the post-tax amount to provide more support to the service staff. Whichever way you choose to tip, it is important to remember that gratuities are a way to show appreciation for the hard work of the service industry workers, especially during these challenging times.

In conclusion, the issue of tipping on the pre-tax or post-tax amount is a matter of personal preference. It is important to be considerate and generous when tipping, as service industry workers have been significantly impacted by the pandemic. Whether you choose to tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount, the most important thing is to show appreciation for the hard work and dedication of the employees who serve you.
