What an amazing find. The construction of the dummy load is so incredibly well engineered it will still be working for many years to come. I thought you were quite brave taking the switching block off but it was definitely worth while as you managed to repair it. Even the cavity within the block was clearly machined to maintain 50 Ohms. I thought the serial number plate was also very interesting. Especially the connection with Ford. Interestingly I used to own a 1990 Ford Sierra with a Philco Radio installed. The name Sierra was clearly being used by Ford for the name of their electronics division long before it was used as a car name. Your restoration was done in good taste, leaving it still showing its age but looking very well clean and maintained. A very enjoyable video Tony.
The arrow of the indicator should be set to zero before measurements.
Hi Tony,
I have a dummy load in the same, but brown in same finned casing, no meter.
Labeled as Lear Siegler, Inc. Sierra Electronic Div. Model no 160B600X Serial no 1541.
50 ohm 600W 1.1 at 1gHz.
Have had it for about 40 years.
This may shock some people, but VERY high power RF 50 ohm loads are used in the manufacturing & testing of RF power tubes using circulating saltwater with a heat exchanger. Hi-power hugely bigly 🙂
Hi Tony.. Very, Very Interesting the video, something not to be expected… Greetings from Buenos Aires…
Watched a video from El Paso Tube Amps on here. He found that electric water heater tank heating elements are 8 ohms and will take a ton of power. He built a tank with some water and anti algae solution for pools for keeping water from getting nasty. Said it worked great. I will find the link. https://youtu.be/5gAUuLkc1ik
Love love love all your videos. Hate having miniature seizures when the 50hz is dissonant with the auto shutter. Does your camera have a selectable anti-flicker freq setting that's off or set to the wrong freq?
Measure that carbon composite resistor value, it could have drifted off a fair amount by now.
The rs1000 power meter is labelled with different brands, I had one the same as that years ago with a different name on it, it was horribly inaccurate, I sold it ages ago as I had other meters.
A nice find and excellent repair! Good to see old gear restored to life. I agree with your definitions, the small loads are terminators and the big ones are dummy loads. Thank you for sharing this repair with us. Regards, David
Nice find. I have some of the Bird dummy loads. Remind me it’s been a while since I have played with a transmitter. Thanks best regards Chris
good work,,i only have 150 watt dummys,i never work on mor than that, now you can test linear power amps
Nice job indeed!
WoW 500W 🙂 Mam racal dana 9104 ale 300W 50om ale nie mam instrukcji do niej.
