Though as a former retail broker I feel like it’s not actually realistic, we all knew every word of Wall Street (the original with Michael Douglas) and loved it. Effing classic.

Boiler Room was closer to the truth of things back in the churn and burn days, and it’s pretty damned good also.

Catch-22. I have followed Minderbinder’s Egyptian Cotton theorem to corner the market in $BBBY sheets. May have to buy a home economics book to learn how to get the red stains out.

Steven Eriksons series “Tale of the Malazan Fallen” by the end of that ten book long haul you will have invested a fuck ton of time and and we might be crawling out of this post covid pullback. You can hit up used book stores to save even more coin that you’re not spending whilst scouring the pages of the best fantasy epic since tolkien.

One of the recurring themes in the series is the true value of time and place. Knowing where you stand and when to move or stand still is important indeed, especially when half to all that you see is manipulated to confuse and mask true value.

Brewster’s Millions. It teaches you about taking on risky opportunities, like iceberg investments, and how to profit. I also recommend Trading Places , which teaches you about trading commodities, such as oranges and pork bellies, which are used to make bacon, which you might find in a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich.

It helps to be well read. For example, news breaks that Russia is considering invading Ukraine. How can you profit from this? You recall reading Ukraine is a major exporter of wheat, and wheat exports might be disrupted by a war. Okay. Wheat. How do I make money on wheat? Futures! You remember wheat futures are a thing. You do a mini YOLO into wheat futures. Now you sit and wait, and see what happens. Russia actually invades. The global wheat supply chain is in shambles. Demand is the same, but supply has decreased. You check your wheat futures, and what do you know! They have risen in value. You sell the futures and go buy some chicken tenders from Wendy.

In short, learn a lot about a lot.

Movie: any of the Rocky movies, because it all goes to show you that you don’t have to be that smart. If you can chase a chicken through the streets of Philadelphia, you have the kind of tenacity that it takes to be a successful trader. If you can stay on your feet after being punched in the head multiple times, you’re golden.

“Number one rule of Wall Street. Nobody… I don’t care if you’re Warren Buffett or if you’re Jimmy Buffett. Nobody knows if a stock is gonna go up, down, sideways, or in fucking circles. Least of all stockbrokers, right? It’s all a fugazi. You know what a fugazi is? Fugayzi, fugazi, it’s a whazy, it’s a woozy, it’s… Fairy dust. It doesn’t exist. It’s never landed. It is no matter. It’s not on the elemental chart. It’s not fucking real. We don’t create shit. We don’t build anything.”
