Rishi Sunak’s Energy U-turns: Birmingham Council Goes Bankrupt | #NovaraLIVE

In a surprising turn of events, Rishi Sunak, the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, has made several unexpected U-turns regarding the country’s energy policies. These policy reversals have caused significant repercussions, with Birmingham City Council even falling into bankruptcy as a result.

The first U-turn came when Sunak, once a strong advocate for renewable energy sources, suddenly scrapped various initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable practices. This move shocked environmental activists and industry experts alike, as the government had previously committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

One of the most notable casualties of Sunak’s decision was the cancellation of subsidies for domestic solar panels. This decision not only impeded progress towards reducing individuals’ carbon footprints but also sent shockwaves through the solar industry. Many businesses and workers relying on the sector for livelihoods were suddenly left in a precarious situation.

Moreover, Sunak’s U-turn on offshore wind power also had far-reaching consequences. The planned expansion of offshore wind farms, once hailed as a pioneering step towards decarbonization and green economic growth, was swiftly abandoned. This move not only undermined the UK’s international reputation but also jeopardized thousands of jobs in the booming offshore wind industry.

Perhaps the most severe fallout from these U-turns was the bankruptcy of Birmingham City Council. Once a prosperous local authority, Birmingham had invested heavily in renewable energy projects, including solar panel installations and energy infrastructure. However, with the sudden removal of government subsidies and support, the council was unable to sustain its investments, leading to its financial downfall.

This bankruptcy sends a dire warning about the potential implications of abrupt policy shifts, not only on local authorities but also on the wider economy. Birmingham’s predicament has left many questioning the government’s commitment to its levelling-up agenda, as the city’s already deprived communities will bear the brunt of the council’s financial collapse.

The repercussions of Sunak’s Energy U-turns have not been limited to Birmingham, however. The sudden withdrawal of support for renewable energy initiatives has caused ripple effects throughout the country. Companies specializing in green technologies have faced uncertain futures, with investment and job creation slowing down significantly.

Environmental campaigners have also expressed their deep disappointment in the government’s actions. The U-turns are seen as a blatant disregard for the urgent need to address climate change and transition to a greener economy. The UK’s credibility as a global leader in sustainability has been tarnished, and trust in the government’s commitment to combatting climate change has been eroded.

It is crucial for the government to reassess its energy policies and reinstate support for renewable energy sources. A clear, long-term framework that supports green industries and incentivizes individuals and businesses to embrace sustainable practices is urgently needed. Without such measures, the UK risks falling behind in the global race towards a greener future.

In conclusion, Rishi Sunak’s energy U-turns have had severe consequences for both the environment and the economy. The cancellation of subsidies and support for renewable energy initiatives has impeded progress towards achieving net-zero carbon emissions and has left many businesses and workers in a vulnerable position. The bankruptcy of Birmingham City Council serves as a somber reminder of the repercussions of abrupt policy shifts, and urgent action is required to restore confidence in the government’s commitment to combating climate change.

Glad that the Left are now reporting on elite pedophiles. The Right have been reporting on this a long long time. We need to step up to the mark.

Is this because a lot of local authority jobs have been outsourced and privatised to facility management companies?

In Western Finland where I live currently, the postal service has been so gutted that we get mail 2-3 times a week. Every other week on Mon, Wed, and Fri; every other week on Tue and Thu. Trying to keep up with which week I should check the mail box is a joke anyway: they have so much late deliveries they have to employ outside help to deliver them on the "off" days. And of course this began with cutting deliveries to 4 days a week first.

They've used the same excuses here: less letters and newspapers so no need for daily deliveries, even though mail deliveries of packages went through the roof during the pandemic and has not come down. Here we had a small scandal when it was discovered that not only is the CEO and other top management being paid ridiculous sums in wages and bonuses, the CEO actually had the Finnish mail service pay for very specific, very high-end golf shares so he can "entertain business partners".

God i live on a very small island in Scotland and on the main route for migrating birds. We lost battle re wind farm and have 140 + cutting the island in half. It shld have been tidal or solar panel power not bloody wind turbines. The islanders r getting no discount for having their island ruined and it is all being sent south to the bloody little english probably. Myself i had a heat pump installed 2 yrs ago with grant from Scottish govmt, thank you to them. It is the best thing i've done and infact i am thinking to get solar panels too. The heat pump cut my heating bill in half.

This story just depresses the hell out of me. The corruption of this council and the destructive power of equality rhetoric tears it's head. Central government paying this off means everyone paying this off, which is completely unfair. The council should be have neoliberalism imposed on them if they fail their constituents so badly.

Dan commented about sewage pollution. I noticed yesterday that the BBC did a feature on sewage and the water companies, and the figures were alarming. The reporter quoted a figure of a raw sewage outfall every 2 minutes on average around the UK. Sadly, they didn't mention the fact that despite paying out £1bn in dividends, 10 water companies paid zero in tax last year. They were given £97.1 million in tax rebates!

The problem with Royal Mail and all other private companies with shareholders is company law, which makes it a legal requirement to put their investors first.

The law needs to be changed so that every effort is made to protect investors' interests but not to enrich them off the backs of poor pay and conditions and poor service.

Bosses pay and shareholder's dividends should be performance based rather than profit based.

  20. legionofswine

Sweden's postal service got privatised a while back, with PostNord taking it over. Straight off stamp charges increased, double I think, and since then deliveries are every other day in many parts of the country. Shite service, which now seems to be the norm for privatised monopoly public service.

  21. JhericFury

Forget imagine getting that bonus while under investigation, imagine getting 18% bonus at all. My bonus last year was 2% and that was part of their "we can't afford an inflation pay rise" bit.

A thing Gillian thingy said on Jeremy vine was that they have two criteria: critical and non critical. Until recently, non critical meant no work was done.
If you're not fixing the school until it's critical, that's a bad thing.
Edit: that's also how the NHS works under the current under funding. Maybe that's the Tory rule: if it's not actively falling apart, why maintain it?

  23. JhericFury

It's very politician to think she's owed a pat on the back for being holding the [alarm clock] when it went off.

Aside from knee jerk anti environmentalism: what's the argument against solar farms? I can understand even if I disagree that wind farm are big and unsightly, but solar farms are very near to the ground, what's the problem with them?

It was again a Labour controlled Glasgow Council that didn't pay women properly. The SNP run council has been forced to sell off public buildings to try to make enough funds to pay off these claims. And people wonder why Scotland hates the Labour Party.

  26. scott flannigan

A labour Council kicked the can down the road and it was left to SNP council to pay out the equal pay payments in Glasgow

Prince Charles the Bagman for the UAE …Mountbatten allegedly having paedophilic predilections seem par for the course with the establishment/ruling classes. Possibly the most interesting book to be written and published by a U.S. investigative journalist in 2023 is the two-volume book/work by Whitney Webb called – One Nation under blackmail. Epstein figures large in these hefty tomes. A tour de force examining the power Nexis amongst the ruling elites, the growth of the security state and how these people are linked in the power play of US politics machinations, from the 1940's through to Epstein's demise. Her many interviews online are astonishing in detail and substance as all her work is meticulously sourced and corroborated by her detailed source material bibliography!
