Neovision Wealth Management’s Chief Economist, Sarah Lemand, recently gave her analysis on the current state of US inflation and the Federal Reserve’s outlook. In a webinar hosted by the firm, Lemand discussed the factors contributing to the recent rise in inflation and what it means for the Fed’s future policy decisions.

Lemand started by acknowledging that inflation has been on the rise in the US in recent months, with the Consumer Price Index showing a 5.4% increase year-over-year in July, the highest in over a decade. She pointed to several factors driving this surge in prices, including supply chain disruptions, higher demand as the economy reopens, and rising wages.

While some of these factors may be transitory, Lemand cautioned that there are also more persistent drivers of inflation at play. These include structural changes in the economy, such as increased market power among large corporations and the ongoing shift towards a more service-oriented economy.

Lemand also discussed the Federal Reserve’s response to this inflationary pressure. The Fed has so far maintained its accommodative stance, keeping interest rates near zero and continuing its asset purchase program. However, there is growing speculation about when the central bank will start tapering its bond purchases and eventually raise interest rates.

Lemand emphasized that the Fed is walking a fine line between supporting the economic recovery and keeping inflation in check. While some policymakers are calling for a more hawkish approach, Lemand believes that the Fed will likely proceed cautiously and only tighten monetary policy gradually.

Overall, Lemand’s analysis provides valuable insights into the current state of US inflation and the Fed’s outlook. With markets eagerly watching for any signals from the central bank, it will be crucial to monitor how the Fed navigates these challenging economic conditions in the coming months.
