If you are one of the many Americans who have a 401K retirement account, you may be wondering how to effectively pick investments for it. Choosing the right investments for your 401K is crucial for ensuring a comfortable retirement, but with so many options available, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. Here is everything you need to know about picking investments for your 401K.
First and foremost, it is essential to understand your investment goals and risk tolerance. Consider your age, retirement timeline, and how much risk you are willing to take on. Younger investors may want to take on more risk in order to potentially earn higher returns, while older investors may opt for more conservative investments to protect their savings.
Once you have a clear understanding of your investment goals and risk tolerance, it is time to review the available investment options in your 401K plan. Most plans offer a variety of mutual funds, including stock funds, bond funds, and target-date funds. Stock funds typically offer higher returns but also come with higher risks, while bond funds are more stable but offer lower returns. Target-date funds automatically adjust the asset allocation based on your retirement date, making them a popular option for many investors.
When selecting investments for your 401K, it is important to diversify your portfolio. Diversification is key to reducing risk and maximizing returns. Consider allocating your investments across different asset classes, industries, and regions to ensure a well-rounded portfolio. Avoid putting all your eggs in one basket and spread out your investments to minimize risk.
It is also important to regularly review and rebalance your 401K portfolio. As the market fluctuates, your asset allocation may shift, so it is crucial to periodically reallocate your investments to maintain your desired risk level. Rebalancing also allows you to take advantage of buying low and selling high, which can potentially boost your returns over time.
Lastly, consider seeking professional advice when choosing investments for your 401K. A financial advisor can provide personalized recommendations based on your individual circumstances and goals. They can also help you navigate the complexities of the financial markets and ensure that your investments align with your long-term objectives.
In conclusion, picking investments for your 401K requires careful consideration and strategic planning. By understanding your investment goals, diversifying your portfolio, and regularly reviewing your investments, you can make informed decisions that will help you achieve a secure retirement. Remember to seek professional advice if needed and stay informed about the latest investment trends to make the most of your 401K savings.
Awesome video Tess! It’s hard especially when one is OCD on picking funds within the 401k. I invest mine 45% Large Cap, 10% mid cap, 10% small cap, 30% international, and 5% bonds. Does that seem ok?
So question, My company matches 6% before tax, after tax or Roth, should i invest the full 6% match on Roth , is that the best approach? Idk why but before I used to do 3% before tax and 3% roth and i have no idea why i did it to be honest lol
Nobody can become financially successful over night. They put in background work but we tend to see the finished part. Fear is a dangerous component, hindering us from taking bold steps we need in other to reach our goals.
Thank you for creating this video. I don't know about investment or finance very well and this was super helpful. Now I feel more confident to work on my 401k.
Thank you so much for this video. I've been helping my dad with his retirement and know nothing about what to do with his 401K. This was very helpful.
I just turned 18 and i am trying to start my 401k. Not a single video could explain well how and what I should invest in the 401k until this one. Thank you❤❤

If the 401K is tied to the stock market through these investments, how is there no risk of loss considering its the stock market?
1:31 the Roth 401k means the portion the employer contributes is taxed, but not the portion you contribute. But then how come you say seconds later, “with a Roth your paying taxes now so you don’t have to pay them later.” … so we DO get taxed on a Roth 401k?
With changes in the economy leading to instability in the stock market, some individuals may face a decrease in their investments in an effort to benefit from the current market conditions, I am considering liquidating my $725k portfolio consisting of bonds and stocks. Someone else in the same situation? Please tell me in the comments!..
