Step 1: Download and Install the Vanguard Mobile App
To begin, you need to download the Vanguard mobile app from your smartphone’s app store. Search for “Vanguard” and look for the official Vanguard logo. Once you find it, click the download button and wait for the app to install on your device.

Step 2: Log In or Create an Account
Once the app is installed, open it and log in using your Vanguard account credentials. If you don’t have an account, you can create one by selecting the “Create an Account” option. Follow the prompts to set up your Vanguard account.

Step 3: Navigate to the “Trade” Tab
After logging in, you should see a home screen with various options and tabs. Look for the “Trade” tab, generally located at the bottom of the screen. Tap on it to proceed.

Step 4: Select the Type of Order
On the trade screen, you will be presented with different order types. Choose the type of order you want to place. Common options include market orders, limit orders, and stop orders. For this example, we will select a market order, which allows you to buy or sell the stock at the current market price.

Step 5: Search for the Stock
In the search bar provided on the trade screen, type in the name or ticker symbol of the stock you wish to purchase. For demonstration purposes, let’s assume you want to buy shares of Apple Inc. Type in “AAPL” or “Apple” and wait for the search results to appear.

Step 6: Select the Stock
From the search results, select the desired stock. In our example, we will select Apple Inc. A new screen will appear, displaying detailed information about the stock, such as its current price, performance, and related news.

Step 7: Review and Confirm the Order Details
Before proceeding, review the order details displayed on the screen. Verify the stock name, ticker symbol, order type, and share quantity. Ensure that these details are correct to avoid any mistakes.

Step 8: Place the Order
If you are satisfied with the order details, click the “Place Order” button at the bottom of the screen. A confirmation screen will appear, asking you to verify your order one last time. Double-check the information and click “Confirm” to finalize the purchase.

Step 9: Monitor your Investment
Congratulations! You have successfully bought stocks on the Vanguard mobile app. You can now navigate to the “Accounts” tab to view your newly purchased shares and track their performance. From this tab, you can also monitor your portfolio’s overall value and make any necessary adjustments.

Conclusion:
Investing in stocks has become simpler and more accessible due to the advent of mobile apps offered by renowned investment firms like Vanguard. By following the steps outlined in this article, you can confidently buy stocks on the Vanguard mobile app, even if you are new to investing. Remember to conduct proper research and consult with a financial advisor if needed before making any investment decisions. Happy investing!

I keep having issues. I deposited $200 to the app. The app tells me I have $200 available. I tried to purchase a stock and did the dollar amount to shares calculator. I put in for $150 worth and it keeps telling me "cant fill order because it's over available limit " . I dont understand why this happening.

thank you jake. you made this so easy to understand. I've opened up my charles schwab brokerage account from watching your videos last summer. yesterday I opened my vanguard brokerage account and couldn't buy any etfs or stocks and was becoming frustrated with the message saying not enough funds. didn't know it took 48 hours with them. this video definitely helped me and is easy to follow. I prefer CS mobile platform though. lol

I keep getting an error message saying if I bought a stock it would exceed my balance, and I have way more money over the shares I plan to buy. I hate this.

Are there any limits to buying stocks on vanguard? I had over $100 in my money market account for over a week and tried to buy a $20 dollar stock. Keeps saying I don't have the funds and may be rejected.
Edit also it is a roth IRA account.

Why do you have an IRA and a separate brokerage account? Also I’m having trouble using the “research” tab on the Vanguard app. I type in a stock and it doesn’t provide any info which seems like a basic feature it should have.

  24. Raider Five5

    Solid!! Great tutorial!!

  25. EvilGenius007

Just today I happened to be in the Google Play store and it showed I had "Early Access" to an app called "Vanguard Beacon" – apparently it's a beta trial of a replacement for this app. Thought you might like to know. (Seems fine, solves my main problem which is that it will allow me to use biometric authentication rather than enter a password. Also doesn't show my account number on every screen, which I thought you might like.)
