How to Buy VTSAX on Vanguard: A Step-by-Step Guide

Investing in index funds has become increasingly popular among individuals looking to grow their wealth through low-cost, diversified portfolios. One such fund that has gained significant attention is VTSAX, offered by Vanguard. In this article, we will guide you through the process of buying VTSAX on Vanguard.

Step 1: Set up a Vanguard Account
If you don’t already have an account with Vanguard, the first step is to set one up. Visit the Vanguard website and click on the “Open an Account” button. Follow the prompts to provide your personal information, including your Social Security number, address, and financial details.

Step 2: Fund Your Account
Once your account is set up, you will need to deposit funds into it. There are several options available, such as a bank transfer or depositing a check. Choose the method that suits you best and follow the necessary steps to fund your account.

Step 3: Research VTSAX
Before investing in any fund, it is crucial to do your research. VTSAX is an index fund that aims to replicate the performance of the CRSP US Total Market Index, providing investors with exposure to the entire US stock market. Take the time to understand its past performance, expense ratio, and overall investment strategy.

Step 4: Access the Vanguard Fund Page
Once you have funded your account and are ready to invest, log in to your Vanguard account and navigate to the Fund page. You can access this page by clicking on the “Investing” tab and then selecting “Funds” from the drop-down menu.

Step 5: Find VTSAX
On the Fund page, use the search bar or browse the available funds to find VTSAX (Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund Admiral Shares). Click on the name of the fund to proceed.

Step 6: Review Fund Information
On the VTSAX fund page, you will find comprehensive information about the fund. Take the time to review details such as the expense ratio, minimum investment requirement, historical performance, and any other relevant information that can help inform your decision.

Step 7: Buy VTSAX
To purchase VTSAX, click on the “Buy” button on the fund page. You will be asked to specify the amount you wish to invest. Ensure that you have sufficient funds available in your Vanguard account to cover the investment. You may choose to invest a lump sum or set up an automatic investment plan.

Step 8: Set up Automatic Investments (optional)
If you plan to make regular investments in VTSAX, consider setting up an automatic investment plan. This allows you to contribute a specific amount at regular intervals, such as monthly or quarterly. This approach promotes disciplined investing and helps you take advantage of dollar-cost averaging.

Step 9: Confirm and Review
After specifying your investment amount, review the details to ensure accuracy. Check the transaction cost, any applicable fees, and the total investment amount. Confirm your purchase and proceed to the final step.

Step 10: Monitor and Manage
Congratulations! You are now a proud owner of VTSAX. Monitor the fund’s performance regularly, but remember that long-term investing is the key to success. Additionally, it’s important to periodically rebalance your portfolio to maintain your desired asset allocation.

In conclusion, buying VTSAX on Vanguard is a straightforward process that can be done online. By setting up a Vanguard account, funding it, researching the fund, and following the step-by-step instructions, you can invest in VTSAX and benefit from its performance and diversification. Remember to conduct due diligence about the fund and consult with a financial advisor if needed. Happy investing!

  28. Medic311

VTSAX isn't designed to track the S&P 500 though as stated in the video, it's designed to track the Total US Stock Market (~3,500 US stocks) vs VFIAX which is only ~500 stocks. VTSAX is 80% large/mid cap and 20% small cap.
