A human rights activist who blew the whistle on the scandal involving an alleged embezzlement of NHIF Funds now says his life is in danger. Salesio Thuranira, a resident of Meru county, recently exposed how several vulnerable patients, who are subscribed to NHIF, lost hundreds of thousands of shillings syphoned by cartels who work in cahoots with private hospitals through unscrupulous deals which include inflation of medical bills. Thuranira claims that days after the scandal went public through media reports he received threats from unknown people and has been forced to live in hiding. Corruption fights back. And it is deadlier than the Mafia. There is nowhere to report corruption. Take for example the recent importation of cooking oil. We have more than six local factories which manufacture cooking fat. We have never experienced shortages in cooking fat, yet some companies we have never heard off were allowed to bring in hundreds of thousands of packaged cooking oil into the country. Where can you report such a scandal? Soon, the local cooking fat industry will close down and give way to these corrupt leaders to bring in the fat at the expense of all the jobs that will be lost.
