“Allah’s Chosen Instrument: Saladin, the Kurdish Warrior” (6-13-81)

Lecture «Saladin the Kurd: Chosen Instrument of Allah» was delivered by Elizabeth Clare Prophet on June 13, 1981, during the 4-day Summit University Seminar “Incarnations of the Magnanimous Heart of Lanello” held at Camelot, Los Angeles County, California.

“Saladin was an example of true Christhood, a saint who realized in his personality the highest virtues and ideals of Mohammedanism. He is celebrated for courage, justice, chivalrous conduct and magnanimity. When Saladin, sultan of Egypt, and Richard I, the Lion-Hearted king of England, met in Egypt, they drew a cross of white fire and of the ruby ray, right there, in the Middle East.” – Elizabeth Clare Prophet

Why we study Lanello’s embodiments…
I realized that we could go no further in putting on the mantle of Lanello’s mastery without knowing more about his previous incarnations. The essential facts of his life are not enough…. To get the very concentrated essence of a virtue, an attainment, a heart fire, we must go back to the point where the virtue was forged and won, where the soul has demonstrated courage, fearlessness, where a particular gift from God, unique in that lifetime, was outplayed to its fullest. — Elizabeth Clare Prophet…(read more)

Saladin, also known as Salah ad-Din, was a prominent Kurdish leader in the 12th century. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest military commanders of the medieval era and is known for his recapture of Jerusalem from the Crusaders in 1187.

For many Kurds, Saladin holds a special place in their hearts as a symbol of Kurdish resilience and strength in the face of adversity. Despite being born in Tikrit, a city in modern-day Iraq, he was of Kurdish descent and spoke the Kurdish language.

Saladin’s military prowess and leadership were clearly evident during his campaigns against the Crusaders. He was a masterful tactician who was able to unite Muslim forces against a common enemy. More than that, however, he was seen as a chosen instrument of Allah – a man who was chosen by God to lead and protect the Muslim world.

This belief in Saladin’s divine mandate was not limited to the Muslim world alone. Even Europeans who fought against him recognized his greatness. The historian William of Tyre, a contemporary of Saladin, wrote: “Saladin was a man of great courage, generous to his friends and merciful to his enemies.”

Today, Saladin’s legacy as a great Muslim leader continues to inspire people around the world, especially among Kurds. His life and accomplishments are celebrated in Kurdish literature, folklore, and music. Many Kurds view him as a symbol of Kurdish nationalism and resistance against oppression.

Saladin’s example, then, shows us that the quest for justice and freedom is not limited to any particular group or nation. Instead, it transcends borders and languages, bringing together people of different backgrounds and cultures in a common cause. The legacy of Saladin lives on as an example of what can be achieved when people work together for a better world.
