MLB: Barry Bonds Swing Breakdown

Barry Bonds is arguably one of the greatest baseball players of all time. His accomplishments on the field are nothing short of extraordinary, and one aspect of his game that stood out was his majestic swing. Bonds’ swing was both powerful and technically sound, making him a formidable force at the plate.

First and foremost, Bonds had incredible bat speed. His swing was lightning-quick, enabling him to catch up to even the fastest of pitches. This was partly due to his exceptional hand-eye coordination and his ability to recognize pitches quickly. Bonds’ swing allowed him to go from a relaxed stance to a powerful and explosive swing in a split second.

Another crucial aspect of Bonds’ swing was his balance and weight transfer. He had a solid foundation while at bat, with a slightly open stance and his weight centered in the middle of his body. As the pitch was thrown, Bonds would slightly shift his weight onto his back leg, loading up his muscles in preparation for the swing. This weight transfer from back to front facilitated powerful hip rotation, generating tremendous power in his swing.

As Bonds initiated his swing, he maintained excellent posture and position of his hands. His hands were held high and close to his body, allowing for a shorter and more compact swing. This minimized the distance the bat had to travel, enabling him to make contact with the ball earlier and more effectively. Additionally, his hands stayed inside the ball, ensuring that he made solid connection and maximizing his bat control.

Furthermore, Bonds had exceptional wrist control, which played a vital role in his swing. As he swung, he would snap his wrists at the point of contact, accelerating the bat through the hitting zone and increasing the force applied to the ball. This helped him generate unparalleled power and drive the ball with incredible distance.

Lastly, Bonds had a keen understanding of the strike zone. He possessed exceptional plate discipline and a great eye for pitches. Bonds was selective in his swings, rarely offering at pitches outside the strike zone. This disciplined approach allowed him to wait for the perfect pitch and capitalize on his tremendous power.

Barry Bonds’ swing was truly a thing of beauty. It combined incredible bat speed, weight transfer, posture, hand control, and plate discipline to create one of the most potent offensive weapons in MLB history. Bonds’ swing was a testament to his natural talent, hard work, and dedication to perfecting his craft. It became his defining trait and a key factor in his numerous accolades, including the all-time record for most home runs in a single season.

Although Bonds’ career remains somewhat clouded by controversy surrounding performance-enhancing drugs, one cannot deny the impact of his swing on the game of baseball. It served as a blueprint for young players striving to excel at the plate, demonstrating the importance of technique and timing. Even today, numerous hitters seek to emulate Bonds’ swing, aiming to capture a fraction of his power and success.

Barry Bonds’ swing will forever be remembered as one of the greatest in the history of Major League Baseball. Its combination of power, technique, and precision revolutionized the game and set a standard that few have been able to match.

idc what people say about Barry and what kinda foul asterisks they put next to his numbers

he was always a great all around player and really good, top tier hitter beginning in his days as a pirate
but later on his career you essentially had to walk this man or face consequences and his bat speed and swing were terrifying man he was like a machine
never seen bat speed like that before or since

bat straight up is lighter ,,more control and EARLY whip BEHIND THE HEAD..thats KEY

  9. The Dude

Now add steroids and you too can break the home run record!!!

The Greatest baseball player to ever walk this planet. Barry Lamar Bonds.

Go watch teacherman! He learned Bond’s swing to a tee. Then taught his kids the swing. Now teaches Aaron Judge and other MLB great hitters. He is awesome!

But Christian Yelich batted .252 while playing 150+ each of the last few years. Albert Pujols was batting over.320 for almost 10 straight years before injury affected his stance at the plate.

And it took Barry Bonds over a decade to perfect his swing before he lost desire for the game. Earlier in his career Bonds was so good at everything (power, stealing bases, fielding, etc), that he needed (strangely) to lose some of those gifts to parallel his average & power.

This is why he was so good near the end of his career. Not steroids.

Nice video! But what about plate discipline? I never saw a batter with such great discipline at the plate as Barry Bonds. If the pitch was not going to be a strike, he did not swing at it.. but if he swung at it he rarely missed. Unbelievable discipline at the plate.

People love to discount Bonds’ skill as a hitter and the amount of practice that went into becoming the hitter he was with the steroid use. Bonds was without a doubt one of the greatest hitters of all time. It’s just a shame he brought it on himself

  21. rpsportstraining program

I hate to have the bat straight up because cannot swing well because it it too steep. At some point you have to flatten out your swing. Maybe the great ones can but I would not teach it to young hitters.

  22. JE MIGGLES719

All your videos are helping me so much and is getting me way more confident up there and making consistent contact thank you

  23. Zebman

Golf is not good comparison for "crouching down". Golfers have to bend over because the ball is on the ground. You can actually it a high pitch very well standing vertically with a fast spin.

  24. something like that

Barry bonds hands were so quick and no wasted movement, throwing a high inside fastball no matter if it was 98 he could always get inside and hit it to the right portion of the field.
He didn’t have any weaknesses for pitchers to counter him.

  25. R A

Great video. One question. What if you trained or taught to hit balls down in the zone? My kid is a low ball hitter , ankles to belt. Above the belt, struggles but I tell him lay off the higher ones. If a pitcher is trying to stay lower, wouldn't it be good to train being a low ball hitter?

  26. Damien Gatson

So where are we trying to hit the ball if we do the high tee drill?

  27. brandon gossman

Not the batting cage beast cameo!!

  28. Heath Guillory

Best bat speed I ever seen.a hall of famer and best hitter that ever lived.had pleasure of watching him as a giant many times just wish he got that ring we had than gave back to the angels.heartbreaking loss.

Does setting your sights high include hitting a pitch for a line drive up the middle for a single with a pitch at your eyes

  30. Arclight545

His swing is nothing compared to Ken Griffey Jr. Minus the roids

  31. Davi Emerim

Hi! Why do hitters like Franco, Counsel or Ogasawara raise their bats so high? Does it add potencial gravitacional energy or something?

  32. mezenman

If you can’t swing slow, how can you swing fast?

  33. j s

Yep. Bat straight up equals less weight in the barrel. Lots of youngsters tend to let the barrel lay flat. That’s a lot of weight to take when it’s horizontal.

  34. Tim Jackson

    Great video

  35. Trey Alexander

Best I’ve ever seen. Could Trout get to his level healthy? Lol. Just a thought
