Benefits for carers who are above State Pension age

If you are above State Pension age and are a carer, there are a a number of benefits that you might be able to claim to help you.

This is great because most carer’s find that it is easier to continue their caring role if they get some support. There are some key benefits that you may be entitled to as a carer above the State Pension age but knowing which benefits you qualify for can be difficult.

In my video I mentioned some of the benefits that the person you care for must already receive in order to qualify for the Council Tax Reduction. Below is the full list:

· Personal Independence Payment – the daily living component

· Disability Living Allowance – the middle or highest care rate

· Attendance Allowance

· Constant Attendance Allowance at or above the normal maximum rate with an Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit

· Constant Attendance Allowance at the basic (full day) rate with a War Disablement Pension

· Armed Forces Independence Payment

· Child Disability Payment – the middle or highest care rate

Caring for a loved one is a difficult job, and for those who are over the state pension age, it can be even more challenging. Fortunately, there are a number of benefits available to carers who are over the state pension age. These benefits can help make caring for a loved one easier and more manageable, allowing the carer to continue in their role.

One of the main benefits available to carers over the state pension age is the Carer’s Allowance. This is a weekly allowance of up to £67.25 (as of April 2021) which can be claimed if the carer is providing at least 35 hours of care a week and is not in full-time education. This allowance is not means-tested, and can be claimed regardless of the carer’s income or savings.

Another benefit for carers over the state pension age is the Carer’s Credit. This is a National Insurance credit which can be claimed if the carer is providing at least 20 hours of care a week. This credit can help to protect the carer’s state pension and help them to qualify for other benefits.
