Title: Claiming Half of the Spousal Social Security Benefit and Continuing Growth until Age 70: Is It Possible? Any Exceptional Cases?

Introduction
The Social Security system provides a range of benefits for married and surviving individuals, including spousal benefits. Among these benefits, there is a provision that allows individuals to claim half of their spouse’s Social Security benefit and continue accumulating their own until they reach the age of 70. However, specific circumstances and actions, such as filing and suspension, may affect the eligibility for this benefit. This article explores whether it is possible to claim half of the spousal Social Security benefit and let one’s own benefit continue to grow until the age of 70, as well as the exceptions to this rule.

Understanding Spousal Benefits
Spousal benefits are designed to provide financial support for spouses who did not qualify for benefits on their own work record but were married to someone who did. Under normal circumstances, an individual can claim a spousal benefit equal to half of their spouse’s full retirement benefit. However, this claim comes with certain prerequisites and limitations.

File and Suspension
File and suspension is a strategy that allows individuals to file for Social Security benefits at their full retirement age without actually receiving the payments. By employing this tactic, individuals can trigger the option for their spouse to claim spousal benefits while their own benefit continues to grow at a rate of 8% per year until age 70, when it reaches its maximum value. This approach can help enhance the overall Social Security income for the couple.

Exceptions to the Rule
While it generally applies to most married individuals, there are a few exceptions to the ability to claim half of the spousal Social Security benefit and let one’s own benefit continue to grow. These exceptions include:

1. Divorced Individuals: Divorced individuals may still be eligible for spousal benefits if certain conditions are met, such as being married for at least ten years, remaining unmarried, and not collecting benefits based on their own work record.

2. Deceased Spouse: Surviving spouses are entitled to claim survivor benefits, which are equivalent to the full retirement benefit of their deceased partner, as long as they have reached the full retirement age. This enables them to let their own benefit grow until age 70, just like in the case of spousal benefits.

Conclusion
For married individuals who have not claimed their Social Security benefits yet, utilizing the strategy of claiming half of the spousal Social Security benefit and allowing their own benefit to grow until the age of 70 can be financially beneficial. However, certain conditions and exceptions exist for divorcees and surviving spouses. It is crucial to consult with a Social Security advisor or visit the official Social Security Administration website for comprehensive information tailored to individual circumstances before making any decisions regarding Social Security benefits.
