In planning many years ahead, I was told by the firm holds both the 457 and roth that I could not do an "in house" roll over because they are both with the same holder but if I had a roth outside of my employer it is ok.

I rolled my roth 457 when I left public service because I have no intention to retire early and the fees were ridiculous, nearly 3%!

I’m in a similar boat. 31 with a 457 and my employer just started to offer a ROTH 401k. I’ll also have a pension. My plan is to leave what I have in the 457 and just make all future contributions to the new ROTH 401k. I’ll utilize the 457, that will have had 24 yrs of compounding, from age 55-59.5 and then ROTH IRA + ROTH 401k after. Anything left over in the 457 after 59.5 is just bonus.

457 distributions require separation from the employer or a qualifying hardship.
