Gingival recession or gum recession can be caused by brushing the teeth too hard, too fast, or too frequently among other reasons. Receding gums may cause increased tooth sensitivity, a cosmetically compromised smile, decay, bone loss, and possibly tooth loss.

Gum recession is a common dental problem that occurs when the gum tissue around the teeth begins to pull back, exposing the root surface of the tooth. It can cause sensitivity, pain, and even tooth loss if left untreated. There are several reasons why gum recession occurs, and it is important to understand them in order to prevent and treat the condition effectively.

Causes of Gum Recession:

1. Gum Disease: The most common cause of gum recession is gum disease, also known as periodontal disease. This destructive bacterial infection affects the gum tissue and bone around the teeth, causing them to pull away from the tooth.

2. Overbrushing: Brushing teeth too hard or using a toothbrush with hard bristles can damage the delicate gum tissue and cause it to recede.

3. Genetics: Gum recession can be inherited, and people with a family history of the condition are at greater risk of developing it.

4. Grinding Teeth: Bruxism, or teeth grinding, can put pressure on the teeth and cause the gums to recede.

5. Tobacco Use: Smoking or chewing tobacco can irritate the gums, leading to inflammation and recession.

How to Treat Gum Recession:

1. Scaling and Root Planing: This non-surgical procedure involves deep cleaning the gum pockets to remove plaque and tartar buildup. The roots of the teeth are then smoothed to promote gum healing and reattachment.

2. Gum Grafting: If the recession is severe, a gum graft may be necessary to restore the damaged tissue and prevent further damage. In this procedure, healthy gum tissue is taken from another part of the mouth and transplanted into the affected area.

3. Use a Soft Bristle Toothbrush: To prevent further damage to the gum tissue, switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush gently.

4. Use Antibacterial Mouthwash: Rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash to kill bacteria and help reduce inflammation.

5. Quit Smoking: Smoking worsens gum disease and can lead to further recession. Quitting smoking is crucial to protect your gum health and prevent further damage.

In summary, gum recession is a common dental problem that can be caused by gum disease, overbrushing, genetics, grinding teeth, or tobacco use. To treat gum recession, seek professional treatment from a dental specialist, use a soft-bristled toothbrush, rinse with an antibacterial mouthwash, and avoid smoking. By taking effective steps to prevent and treat gum recession, you can maintain healthy gums and teeth for a lifetime.

Oh man, did they ever lie to me when I was a kid. I was told to brush hard, for a long time and after every meal. I have exactly what you're describing. My dentist didn't do an operation with my gum tissue, he used that white bonding material to cover up the root and blend in with my teeth. Where were you when I was a kid?!

Main cause of all tooth problems are ignorance of clealiness and platic brushes.better to use twig.there is no sustitute of twigs.

You are so right! I'm an 85 year old female and I had full tooth braces when I was very young. Also, the dentist always said to get the toughest brush possible and really give my teeth (after the braces were removed) the strongest brushing possible. Of course, I followed orders and now my poor gums have all receded and I probably won't be able to outlast them.

Surprised the hell out of me when I started to develop gum issues.
I never brushed hard but through and through for at least 5-8 mins that's rinse brush scrub etc which may have weakened my enamel I believe it's a 2 min brush should cover the whole mouth so I was easily brushing 3x longer than recommend needless to say receding is developing on one side, the go to side can see some on the other side not as bad. Sucks I always take really good care of my dental hygiene I brushed on time floss when needed didn't really visit dentist didn't need to.

Can collagen or growth hormone be injected (or taken orally) to promote gump and bone generation ? Collagen is used to fill the gump in the pinhole surgery for gump recession. But doctors prescibe it for collagen and bone for the elderlies.

  13. Deluaro

I've been brushing my teeth 3 to 4 times a day with an electric toothbrush and started to notice some gum recession. I'm already certain it's to do with my brushing habits and eased up on the brushing. Will it recover?

Dentists would tell me brushing your gums is just as important as your teeth. Brushing your gums helps to strengthen them and keeps them healthy.

  22. Esoteric Solitaire

Exactly what my dentist said. Brush easier and less frequently.

  23. ANewKindaGuy

What toothbrush do you suggest? Are electronic ones bad? My Dentist recently told me to start doing this due to plaque build up I had after my cleaning.. but, now I’m confused because you mentioned using a soft brush..

  24. Kim thom

In the UK any dentist I have known has never stressed by the importance of brushing too hard but I don't think I'm I've ever done that. But my in poor children have had no terrible in luck with their teeth especially my youngest at 23. Never had sugary drinks or sweets but his teeth just seem to go bad from the root. He was under the dental hospital for 18years and most times all they did was extract. It broke my heart as his mum who looked after them so well. He has special needs and I think maybe there's been reflux thru his life. I feel those dentists in let him down big be time. When it was too in late they started recommending high fluoride toothpaste and Vit D. Too late. More black teeth. So sad.

  25. Liza Ireland

Very informative. And dam it, I've been brushing all wrong!! Never heard of taking tissue to repair gum recession. My dentist obviously needs to get up to date. Can imagine his face when I tell him next time, "Oh, no-no, you're doing it wrong." LOL
