Subscribe here: Welfare for all Ukrainian refugees – and not just new arrivals – living in State accommodation may be cut to lower levels of €38.80 per week, according to Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys.
This is the first such indication that welfare may be cut for all Ukrainian refugees living here already and not just new arrivals.

The Government before Christmas signed off on the new lower rates of welfare for Ukrainians coming into the country.

However, this lower rate will apply only to new arrivals once the laws are passed in several weeks.

Ukrainian refugees living in State provided accommodation now receive €232 per week as per the Jobseeker’s Allowance.

Tens of thousands currently live in hotels, B&Bs and other State provided housing across the country.

“I think it could well be the case that down the road we may have to make the decision that anybody in State provided accommodation, regardless of what date they arrived, they will receive a payment of €38.80,” Minister Humphreys told the Dáil.

“We may have to make the decision that anybody in State provided accommodation, regardless of what date they arrived that they will only receive a payment of only €38.80

“So I think it’s important, therefore, that we retain some level of flexibility here.”

The rate of €38.80 per week is currently the payment being made to asylum seekers living in international protection.

The Government decided to cut the offering to newly arriving Ukrainians so Ireland is “in line” with other European countries.

As well as lower welfare payments, Ukrainians will see 90 day limits in State accommodation.
