▼Synopsis
During the Tenpo period, the three samurai under the command of the Nanba magistrate, Torii Kaibei (Takahiro Tamura), were regarded as useless troublemakers in their everyday duties as inspectors of the Yoseido Health and Sanitation Bureau (Koishikawa). They were: Ukai Mokuzaemon (Nobuo Kaneko), who was responsible for handling exceptional cases; Katsura Urakusai (Takashi Yamaguchi), who was in charge of investigating land disputes; and Takagi Kanpei (Tsunehiko Watase), who was responsible for observing and reporting any suspicious activities. However, their true identities were those of assassins, known as the “”Shadow,”” who were sent to eliminate villains who had escaped punishment by the law.
In 1975, a 28-episode series was broadcasted every Saturday at 10 PM on MBS-TBS. It was the successor to the time slot that had aired the “”Hissatsu”” series (“”Hissatsu Shigotonin””) and was often considered a derivative work due to the similarity in content. However, the show had unique characters that fully utilized the personalities of Yamaguchi, Watase, and Kaneko, especially the killing techniques of Moshioemon played by Kaneko, which left the viewers speechless. The show also had well-developed villain guest characters and deserved more recognition. At the time when kung fu was booming, the martial artist Lin Taikou, who is still active as a martial arts practitioner, delivered authentic karate and nunchaku performances as Genta, an informant.
