Horror inflation data: How much with the Fed hike rates? Investment implications?

The latest US inflation data came in much higher than expected. CPI inflation was 8.6% y/y (vs 8.2% expectations). Similarly, core CPI inflation was 6.0% (vs 5.9% expectations). This video discusses the inflation data, inflation drivers and components, and the implications for the federal reserve. I also discuss investment implications, including which stocks might especially gain or lose in a high inflation environment.

Alan Kohler wrote an interesting article the other day saying the RBA should not increase rates this time. In a nut shell, it should be left to run it's course due to the inflation being caused by energy price shocks and not wage price increases. Interesting theory but his article made sense.

Saw some talk of inflation not being as concerning after excluding energy + food. What do you think of the approach to leave out some things when considering inflation?

Do you see precious metals as a potentially viable investment vehicle over the next 5 or so years? Let's say energy supply continues to remain small, exacerbating inflation. Throw in another disruptive event (China invades Taiwan, something breaks in the market due to rate hikes, monkeypox mutates to become more transmissible lol), people will likely squeeze into assets that can't default. USD looks good for this in the short term. But if govt is concerned of default amid necessary rate hikes, they will buy their own debt to get out of it – which would itself exacerbate inflation.
