Here I demonstrate an example of how to actually invest in a Vanguard Roth IRA portfolio by going through an example of buying VTSAX for my own Roth IRA. This is a step-by-step tutorial for investing at Vanguard and buying VTSAX for both the computer and through the Vanguard mobile app. This tutorial is meant for absolute beginners to help alleviate some of the feelings of intimidation or nervousness about investing their money and to actually get started investing!
I am not endorsed by Vanguard, I just use them for all of my investing. This process works across all different brokerage platforms and shows how to invest in the stock market via mutual funds and index funds. This also gives a brief ‘investing 101’ at the beginning to demonstrate the process of how money is transferred from your bank account into the brokerage account and finally by investing in an index fund (VTSAX).
I get that investing for the first time can be intimidating and I hope this video sheds a little bit of light on the process so you can take the first steps and start building wealth!
Disclaimer: I am NOT recommending or endorsing VTSAX or any other mutual fund (legally, that’s a no-no); I have it in my Roth IRA because it fits my investing strategy and goals. Do not substitute my opinion for your own when it comes to investing. This is simply for educational purposes to show the process of investing at Vanguard and buying VTSAX (or any other mutual fund) for that matter for your Roth IRA.

Thanks for the video! Planning on opening a Roth IRA. Do I need to max it before I can start pulling from it to buy VTSAX? Or could I open the Roth IRA, deposit $3,000 into it, and immediately buy VTSAX? This would leave me with $0 in the Roth. Is that ok?
Been looking for a tutorial like this! Thank u!
I'm a beginning investor and had created a Vanguard Roth IRA account but it's under a brokerage account, so I am unable to get funds like VTSAX that's held under a mutual fund. Would you know how I would go about changing this? Are there any advantages for me to stay with the brokerage Roth IRA? Thanks.
So helpful!!
Thanks great information
What if you don’t have enough money for the limit of 3000$ to buy VTSAX? Then do you wait until have the 3 grand to start? Or do you buy into single share ETFs and sell those when you’ve reached 3000 and buy into the mutual fund(vtsax)? that key portion as a beginners of the 3000 limit is what I’m having trouble with
You never showed how to invest for the previous year. Many of us cannot invest the full $6000 to our IRA, so we have to wait until we have our accountant do our taxes after the year is over and then the accountant tells us we can invest $3773 or whatever it might be. How do you choose what year we contributing the IRA for???

This is a great video tutorial on how to buy VTSAX with Vanguard. This video will teach people who wants to buy index fund with Vanguard. This is not like other Youtubers they just telling people on which one is the best index fund to buy. Then you have to find the way to buy fund by yourself or call Vanguard to help you out. Thank you very much for making a good content.
Thank you! Just opened an account and was kind of confused on how to navigate the page to invest. Another good point to touch on would be how to decide on Order Types.
