Bonding Guinea Pigs | 5 Tips

Bonding guinea pigs can be quite a challenge as all introductions are different, and you never know how they will react until you finally let them meet. Some guinea pigs will never get along, and these tips are not guaranteed to work for all guinea pigs, though in my time of owning guinea pigs, I have followed these tips with mostly all successful outcomes. You just have to find a way which will work best for the guinea pigs you have based on their individual personalities. Also, don’t be alarmed if the guinea pigs continue displaying dominant behaviour after living together for a while – it is likely they are still trying to establish a hierarchy, so you must give them time!

I tried the little pin hang out with fresh matting and snacks, this worked amazing! One did try to mount the other (both female) and the same one chattered her teeth but they weren’t biting and they seemed to snuggle by each other while enjoying snacks together which I’m really happy about! I will be cleaning the cage but remove the divider and I’m considering giving them both a bath so they both would share a similar scent to maybe help give that boost

    Are they boys?

I have a female piggie 1 year old and I introduced her a baby female 1.5 months old. The old one bites the baby and bullies it all the time. Specially when the little one comes closer

Tried all these methods on the video. It's been second week and the old one still bites or chases away the little one when they meet on neutral ground. I have them in the same cage with a separator between them so they can communicate and smell each other.

I thought they where social animals. And females werent fighting. WTF
Now I feel like an idiot. Because everyone said piggies shouldn't be alone.

I've been bonding my 11 week old with my 11 month old and it's so cute watching them interact (from a distance) I didn't know leaving them alone was good, luckily I've just let them do their thing but I monitor the situation had a few teeth chattering moments but it was my young pig letting big pig know he's in his space

My older guinea pig is attacking my baby one what do I do!? I made a divider in the middle of the cage.

  12. shadow

You do not bond with a four legged shit machine.

  13. Possiblyevie

My guinea pigs are not the same size so when they dominate the smaller one gets hurt the smaller one is the size of a hamster and the other is quite big and I’m scared that they will hurt each other or brake his back. Any tips?

Both of my guinea pigs bite eachother

this has been so helpful! i just adopted a 2 year old male named August but he came alone. i know that it’s better to have them in pairs so we’re getting another piggie soon. i was just wondering what would you suggest? we’re pretty sure we need to get a younger male but Auggie is a little shy. sorry i’ve never had guinea pigs before so i’m learning a lot but im just looking for some advice 🙂 any is super appreciated my roommates and i are still planning this out

Sometimes guinea pigs will chirp if they don’t have a hidey hole, especially at night. Your pig may have been feeling anxious about being exposed in open space when they’d normally sleep in a shelter. Removing hidey holes is a good idea to avoid a pig getting cornered and fighting during introductions, but replacing them with ones with two exits can give your pigs security and an easy escape.

What if you have 2 guinea pigs and I’m getting one more, will the same method work? And do you have to stay with them for hours or can you just let them be?

  21. Ryo Violet

Hi. This is very late but if you still reply, my guinea pigs that know each other are doing that teeth chattering. I don't really know what to do. The one that's teeth chattering will chase her sis. anything you know I should do?

  22. lostmau5

Yeah, split cage method might have to be permanent for my couple. The two pigs are vicious when close, but communicate a lot when seperated.

I am just terrified of losing one of them due to an injury from a bad fight.

Is it okay to have guinea pigs in separate houses but let them run around all the time together

  24. • F A N G •

Letting the guinea pigs meet in your lap isn’t the best idea because they can’t do what they would normally do when they were in your lap

  25. lily neuro

I am getting another guinea pig possibly 2 by guinea pigs today and I’m going to do the neutral territory one!

  26. Jadella Leonard

I have a question i have introduced my two males today with the serated cage idea. One is an older male the other is young for some reason the older male is trying to destroy the cage and biting the gates to get to him any ideas what to do i dont have another cage but was afraid he was lonely by himself

  27. PiggiesAtTheTop

I have a question. So one of my guinea pigs nips at my New Guinea pig through the c&c square so I put a peice of chloroplast. What should I do nest?

  28. Unicorn girl

How many days do we have to do the split cage method

  29. Junebug

How long do they act dominant

  30. Spoon

The separate cage thingy doesn’t work because they will act like they dont know each-other no matter what. They need to meet on the floor in the neutral area before being in the lap together. They need to figure out dominance, who’s in charge etc. there should be no hides in the area unless there is two doors on the hides. Once you put piggies together do not separate them unless necessary. You need hides in the cage, but ones with two doors. Do NOT put the new pair in a dirty cage. The pig that the cage smells like will want to take over and show who’s in charge. If bonding males there will be a nasty smell but thats normal thats how they show whos in charge Females have a 80% chance of bonding while males only have 50% (Not hating just educating)

My friend had 2 pigs and he said one ripped the others head off

  32. Alonna Robertson

this video is in a work of process for me cause i tried putting them in the bathroom and they did good and once i put them in a cage together they started fighting and so i kept them in the same cage but put a separator inside so they can look at each other without hurting each other and so i just kept them like that for a few months and today i tried it again but i put them in my closet and it was enough space and so far they've been chasing each other, screaming and laying down so i thought they were friends now well i thought wrong they continued to bite each other so i tried again a year later and 5 hours in and there still fighting, what should i do?!??

I've had a skinny for almost 2 months and I just got another guinea pig who's younger. They're both boys. Twice now I've introduced them in neutral territory, but the new one chases my skinny and bites him. He's breaking skin, so I really worries me. They're sharing a cage with a partition. Today is the first day they have interacted a lot. My skinny squeaks at the new one a lot then popcorns everywhere. I'm gonna try having both of them on my lap tonight. I think that might be better.
