Hmm I thought it was possible to roll over a Fidelity 401k/403b online to Vanguard. I'm planning on switching. Thanks for the tutorial.

Thank you so much for posting. Found your how-to videos most informative and helpful. Deeply grateful.

Are those over 59.5 years of age able to receive dispersments from a QDRO 401k that hasn't been touched for several years? I've been reading that dispersments are taxed the same as regular income.

I am nearly one year past my retirement eligibility age and am wondering whether dispersments are a better option than a roll-over, since the 401k is in the hands of a very stable brokerage firm: i.e., Fidelity Investments.

Nice video as I plan on rolling over from Empower to Vanguard. Don't they have an option for direct transfer without mailing a check to you? I probably would have filtered out my address on the video. I have most of my money at Ameriprise but the fees are high (0.75%) and I don't want to put all of my eggs into one basket. Thanks for the video.

    I'm confused, aren't you only able to rollover/contribute $6000/year?

When I first started investing I opened accounts in both banks and quickly realized that I liked fidelity's app so much more. When it transferred my money someone made a one 1 mistake that transfered someone else's 2 million retirement account into my roth ira. It was an awesome story until they took it back lol

How long did it take for you to receive the check after your call with fidelity?

So a 401 can roll into an IRA. But , if i made an IRA this year i can only put a few thousand in it. I don't understand.

I have a Roth Mutal fund from my bank which I want to move it over to Vanguard roth Mutual fund. Do, I do the same.. just confused.. thanks

Wow, this was so helpful! I also have an old 457b that I have been too lazy to rollover. It's been about 3 years at this point so I need to get around it. I am so glad you touched on the mobile deposit portion because something about mailing the physical check made me nervous. I already have my Roth IRA and taxable brokerage at Vanguard and just want to consolidate my accounts so seems like I'll just need to open my rollover IRA at Vanguard! Calling my old institution and Vanguard this week to get more details. New subscriber here.

Ok but why didn't you stay with Fidelity IRA instead of Vanguard IRA?

I am in the process of rolling my old 401k to Vanguard. Do you recommend those two funds to start with. VTI and VXUS?

Did you do all of this from your smartphone?

Thanks for the video – what about the taxes on the rollover to the Roth IRA? Can you please explain your strategy?

This seem like a bad idea unless you plan on being an expat. Vanguard is better for expats. Otherwise stay with Fidelity for fractional shares for all ETFs and stocks. Also their zero expense ratio S&P 500 Index mutual fund (FNILX) has outperformed VFIAX/VOO.
