Anyone who enlisted prior to 2018 and does not plan on doing 20 years should opt in BRS. Anyone in BRS should invest at least 5% of income to receive the 5% match. Everything else equal the more you invest the more you will have at retirement, so endeavor to contribute at least 10% or more. Anyone who serves overseas in a combat zone earns tax free income and should invest that money in a Roth TSP and or Roth IRA. (Also take advantage of Savings Deposit Program and earn 10%.) Many if not most military (because they in a low tax bracket) should favor the Roth TSP over the traditional TSP.
