In episode nine of the podcast “Stay Human” hosted by Michael Franti, documentary filmmaker Lee Hirsch shares his thoughts on the current state of the world, particularly the recession brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Hirsch, best known for his documentary “Bully,” which explores the repercussions of bullying in schools, speaks about his own struggles during this time. As a filmmaker, he relies on funding and grants to support his work, but with COVID-19 affecting the economy, he’s found it more difficult to secure funding.

Hirsch also talks about the larger implications of the recession, such as the impact on education and the growing inequality gap. He points out that the pandemic has highlighted systemic issues and that the recession is exacerbating those problems.

Despite the difficulties, Hirsch remains optimistic. He emphasizes the importance of individual actions and community support, citing the examples of small businesses and grassroots organizations that are finding innovative ways to adapt and support each other during this time.

He also stresses the importance of empathy and understanding, especially when it comes to those who are struggling financially. Instead of judgment and blame, he advocates for a compassionate approach that seeks to understand and address the root causes of poverty and inequality.

Hirsch’s message is one of both realism and hope. While the recession is undoubtedly a difficult challenge, he believes that by working together and supporting each other, we can emerge stronger and more resilient on the other side.

So government stimulus is the only way out? How very keynesian

  4. Jacob

The root cause of the business cycle, the boom and the bust, is manipulation of money and credit which lowers interest rates below their natural market price. That's what produces malinvestments and bad loan behaviour.

Ah, so it's not greed, it's Confidence that's creating all those luxury condos. And it's all thanks to a Stimulus present from the government. Thanks for wasting your life miseducating! Nice bow tie!

Although if the family owns a farm they haven't made money with the crops for a century or so… All the money comes from subsidies as all politicians are willing to spend endlessly to appease farmers.

this video is really amazingly, visually distracting haha. hard to focus on what he's saying when they are  doing the shadows

  9. Matthew Slater

Banks drive booms and busts because they make more money from a volatile economy. Recessions are NOT caused by human nature, except insofar as banking corporations are human. This film is masking the thief and blaming the victim.

A pretty simplistic version of recession. Sure psychology of humans comes into play, how institutions and individuals react to recessions, but that's not the cause of them. Recession is a natural cycle of this current system of economics. Unchecked, unregulated free market crony capitalism is what causes recessions. Sure individual greed and psychopathy may be the root of that, but it takes more than that.

Thank you for the patronising and the attempt at manipulation, but this comes too late/too early/at a wrong time.  We are having a good time with Russell Brand, Jeremy Rifkin at al.  (It is a symptom that Pilobulus Dance Group had to sell out).

Fantastic! Easily my favourite so far.

Humans cause recessions?!  Public Works as Unemployment compensation?  A bit over simplistic and a tad sarcastic.

    that was incredibly uninformative

  15. S A

yes a recession is caused by humans very wealthy humans who know what they're doing especially since the very wealthy have the largest income percentage of all of america, if i recall its something like the top ten percent earned over 75% of the income americans earned in the past few years

  16. Edgar Xontm

Nice video, but said nothing at all.

  17. SylvEdu

Yes, recessions can occur naturally, but this video would have us believe that the boom-bust cycle is naturally occurring and unavoidable when that is far from the truth. It seems like this channel flip-flops between knowing what their talking about and spewing crap. Disliked.
