Having My Son Name our Newest Baby!
Choosing a name for a new family member is always a special and emotional experience. It is a decision that will stay with them for the rest of their lives, shaping their identity and sense of self. When my husband and I found out we were expecting our second child, we knew we wanted this process to be even more meaningful and inclusive for our family. That’s when we came up with the idea of having our oldest son name his soon-to-arrive little sibling.
Our son, who was 6 years old at the time, was ecstatic about being given such an important task. We explained to him that this decision would have a big impact on his brother or sister, and he took the responsibility very seriously. He spent months making lists of potential names, asking family and friends for suggestions, and contemplating the significance of each name.
As the due date approached, he presented us with his top three choices and we were impressed by his thoughtfulness and creativity. It was a difficult decision, but we ultimately settled on the name that our son had suggested as his favorite. The pride and joy on his face when we told him couldn’t be overemphasized. He felt a strong sense of connection and ownership over his new sibling, and it was beautiful to witness.
When our newest addition arrived, we introduced him to the world using the name chosen by his big brother. It felt like a fitting and heartwarming way to welcome him into our family. Our son beamed with pride and it was clear that he felt a special bond with his little brother through this shared experience.
Naming our baby in this way allowed our oldest child to be an active participant in the process, fostering a sense of responsibility, belonging, and family unity. It also gave him a sense of importance and pride, knowing that his opinion was valued and respected by his parents. Our little one now has a name that holds a deeper meaning for our family, and that is something we will always cherish.
As he grows, we hope that the experience of naming his baby brother will be a source of pride and joy for our oldest son. We also believe that it will foster a strong bond between the two siblings, built on mutual respect and love.
Involving our son in this way has been an incredibly rewarding experience for our family. It has taught us the value of inclusivity, communication, and the importance of making decisions together. We are grateful that we were able to create such a special and meaningful moment for our family, and we look forward to seeing the bond between our boys grow as they journey through life together.

I’m 3 years older than my sister and I called her “baby Austin” bc that’s where we lived I guess and we thought she was a boy so they gave her Austin for a middle name
