Any reason not to fill up the mega backdoor roth bucket first then move to after-tax? I thought you can always use roth contributions as after-tax funds if needed.
I struggle with this. Mega is so hard to pass up, but my brain says put a little more in taxable.
I put my extra non 401k cash into a taxable account. Thank goodness I did. Allowed me to take a buyout at 51 and retire(last year). Rolled over the the 401k and it can grow until I’m 59 1/2. Low debt helped too. Only owe on my house.
Wish I got this advice when I was 40. Great topic and solid answer!!
Great discussion. I personally don't view this as an "option" as the Roth is so powerful. My wife & I cap the mega backdoor. I guess there's a benefit to have access to money in taxable, but you can access Roth contributions and/or do a Roth conversion ladder if retiring early.
Very helpful advice. Thanks for a great show
This was a very helpful discussion! Thank you!!!
