Social Security Benefits rules and countries listed for non-US citizens can be found here : (and PDF page 7 within). Besides a note of caution that local SSA office representatives may not have complete information on the benefits to non-citizens. Also note that the SSA.gov specifies everywhere on their site that the information is subject to change so please do your own research at the time of viewing this video. 🙂 My intension in this video is to make you aware of this benefit so you can avail it if you qualify to receive it. But if there is any incorrect information do reference it for the benefit of all. Best!

Title: Social Security Benefits for Non-Citizens *MUST WATCH*

Introduction

In today’s globalized world, it is increasingly common for individuals, including non-citizens, to live and work in countries other than their own. As governments address the needs of their diverse populations, one area that often arises is social security benefits. In this article, we will explore the rights and eligibility of non-citizens to receive social security benefits in the United States, highlighting essential information that individuals should be aware of. Whether you are a non-citizen residing in the US or curious to understand the benefits available to non-citizens, this article is a must-read.

Eligibility Criteria for Social Security Benefits

The eligibility criteria for non-citizens to receive social security benefits in the United States depend on several factors, including immigration status and work history. Generally, to be eligible, non-citizens must meet the following criteria:

1. Lawfully residing in the United States: Non-citizens must have the legal right to reside in the US. This can include permanent residents, refugees, asylees, certain non-immigrant visa holders, and individuals with specific immigration statuses.

2. Working and paying Social Security taxes: Non-citizens typically need to have a work history in the United States, where they have been contributing to the Social Security system by paying Social Security taxes. The number of years worked and the amount contributed may affect the benefits received.

Special Situations and Exceptions

While the general criteria mentioned above apply to most non-citizens, there are certain exceptions and special situations worth noting:

1. Cross-country agreements: The United States has signed international agreements with some countries to recognize their social security systems. These agreements, known as Totalization Agreements, can enable non-citizens to qualify for social security benefits based on their work history in both the United States and their home country.

2. Non-citizens with disabled family members: In certain cases, non-citizens may be eligible for social security benefits if they have a disabled family member who meets the applicable criteria.

Applying for Social Security Benefits

To apply for social security benefits as a non-citizen, individuals should visit their local Social Security Administration (SSA) office or apply online through the official SSA website. It is crucial to gather all necessary documents, including proof of immigration status, work history, and any relevant cross-country agreements, to support the application.

Conclusion

The social security benefits available to non-citizens in the United States can provide much-needed support and security. Understanding the eligibility criteria and exceptions is essential for non-citizens to access the benefits they are entitled to based on their immigration status and work history. For individuals interested in receiving social security benefits, it is advisable to consult with an immigration attorney or the local Social Security Administration office to ensure accurate information and guidance tailored to their specific circumstances.

Thus, it is crucial for non-citizens, and those interested in understanding their rights, to explore the social security benefits available to them.

1 question ahe Mandar. Can an individual qualify for Social Security benefits earlier like at age 45 or 50 or so? If yes what are the clauses of that?

  17. Rakesh Mishra

For 401k, if you are moving back to India, transfer to IRA. No need to pay taxes on capital gain.

  18. Indian

40 count is not 10 years but 10 calendar year, even if you earn 5k amount in a year it is count as 4 credits. I had 40 count in less months because I worked in multiple break in USA

  19. logical bias☣️

These benefits require several (regular) visits to offices. Sadly not everything is online. And you need US address for communication.

So outside US ? It will just laps for many

  20. sankar gavireddy

Thanks for good information. I’ve been looking for this quick some time . Keep post good videos like this .

  21. Sameer Sheth

Hey Mandar nice video as usual.. Got to know so many things. Specially how to check your social security balance

  22. Charu Pandya

    Hello Mr. Mandar,
    I'm a green card holder.
If I work for less than 40 quarters, do I get any social security benefits?

  23. Emilio Yepez

I am new to the stock market. Every stock that I bought so far, I was out of luck because I bought them when they were expensive. I feel I missed out on all the stock opportunities so far for the tech stocks.I believe having 75K yearly income would be a good investment so I want to plug all my savings into the stock market. I know this sounds a bit dull but I would like to know if I should learn investing or let somebody else (more capable like a FA) do it for me? Please share your thoughts. I am kind of tired of searching for a good stock to buy and losing all the good opportunities

  24. Vasudevan Sivalingam

I’ve not competed 40 quarters or 10 years of my employment in US. I employed in US only about 9 yrs. But I see I’ve gained 40 points in ssn website. The 40 points progress bars all green in the official ssn website.

How come is it possible? I wonder.

  25. Vikram

Hi Mandar, I think I differ on this point. Non US citizens holding Indian passport are "eligible" for SS benefits if they have earned 40 credits but they cannot claim SS benefits after 62/67 without a LPR number. This is because India does not have a totalization agreement with US. Please validate and confirm.

  27. prasanna naware

We checked with the SSN office and the benefits can only be availed if you have a green card
H1B holders are not eligible even if they have 40 credits

  28. Srilakshmi Bhamidipati

Mr. Mandar… If a person gets green card after working 6 or 7 years will it be counted for Social security Benefit after Retirement?

  29. KS

Indian citizens qualify. But the benefit is capped to the total amount you have contributed. So it’s not a lifelong payment. Please take that into consideration.

  30. Ragini Gupta

From your video, you are indicating that 401K gets taxed. However, the video does not cover the scenario as to when 401K gets taxed. For 401K, taxes have to be paid at the time of withdrawal, not when the fund is in the invested state, plus penalties come into play and age gets factored in as well. I understand you start with a disclaimer that you cannot cover all details, but I felt this was a case of over-simplification. Regardless, great presentation, keep the good work.

  31. Vivek Singh

Just a thought – the thumbnail says "SSN benefits", it should be Social Security benefit".

  32. Pulak Majee

Practically Indian citizens don't get SSN benefit even if you have 40 point, due to India is not part of the SSN beneficial country list.. except you have GC and you are going India frequently. But that's also not a good option to carry as GC can be revoked if you are not spending much time in USA in a year

  33. malini siva

I am 65 but was a housewife am I eligible as a dependent of my husband never worked

  34. Praveen Gupta

Mandar-can you pass on the SSN amount to beneficiary in case you pass away ? what is the proxy for that ?

  35. Premananth Ramasamy

How long will we get the SSN benefits? is it available after the death too. will our spouse get the benefits?

  36. mohan n

Great to know about SSN benefits for non citizens

  37. kp

Thanks for sharing information on very important topic.
