Nepal’s Economy Dips into Recession, Reaches Lowest Point in 60 Years | UPSC | StudyIQ

Nepal, a small landlocked country situated between China and India, is facing an economic crisis that has pushed the country into a recession for the first time in 60 years. The Nepali economy has been severely impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, with lockdowns and restrictions leading to a significant decline in economic activity.

According to official statistics, Nepal’s economy shrank by 3.84% in the fiscal year 2020-21, marking the lowest growth rate in six decades. The decline in economic growth has been attributed to a sharp drop in remittances, which account for a significant portion of Nepal’s GDP. The country relies heavily on remittances from migrant workers abroad, particularly in countries like India, Qatar, and Malaysia.

The closure of businesses and restrictions on movement have also taken a toll on the country’s tourism industry, which is a major source of revenue for Nepal. The lockdowns and travel restrictions have led to a sharp decline in tourist arrivals, impacting hotels, restaurants, and other tourism-related businesses.

In addition to the impact of the pandemic, Nepal has also been facing political instability and a lack of investment in critical infrastructure projects. The country’s lack of reliable electricity supply and poor road networks have hindered economic growth and development.

The Nepali government has introduced measures to try and revive the economy, including stimulus packages and monetary support for businesses affected by the pandemic. However, the country’s limited fiscal space and high levels of debt have made it difficult to implement large-scale economic reforms.

Experts warn that Nepal’s economy may continue to struggle in the coming years, with challenges such as high inflation, unemployment, and a widening trade deficit. The government will need to focus on attracting foreign investment, improving infrastructure, and diversifying the economy to ensure long-term growth and stability.

In conclusion, Nepal’s economy is facing a period of unprecedented hardship due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, political instability, and structural challenges. The government must take decisive action to address these issues and revitalize the economy to ensure a brighter future for the people of Nepal.
