* Netflix beat third-quarter expectations on the top and bottom lines Tuesday.
* The company said it added 2.41 million net subscribers during the quarter, higher than the 1 million it had forecast.
* Netflix will begin to crack down on password sharing next year.
Netflix shares skyrocketed more than 14% after the bell Tuesday as the company posted better-than-expected results on the top and bottom lines. The streamer also reported the addition of 2.41 million net global subscribers, more than doubling the adds the company had projected a quarter ago.
Additionally, Netflix will begin to crack down on password sharing next year, opting to allow people who have been borrowing accounts to create their own. The company will also allow people sharing their accounts to create sub-accounts to pay for friends or family to use theirs.
Here are the results:
**EPS: $3.10 vs. $2.13 per share, according to Refinitiv.**
**Revenue: $7.93 billion vs. $7.837 billion, according to Refinitiv survey.**
Expected global paid net subscribers: Addition of 2.41 million subscribers vs. an addition of 1.09 million subscribers, according to StreetAccount estimates.
The majority of Netflix’s net subscriber growth during the quarter came from the Asia-Pacific region, which accounted for 1.43 million subscribers. The U.S.-Canada region had the smallest growth of Netflix’s regions, contributing just 100,000 net subscribers.
“We’re still not growing as fast as we’d like,” Spencer Neumann, Netflix’s chief financial officer, said during the company’s earnings call. “We are building momentum, we are pleased with our progress, but we know we still have a lot more work to do.”

I guess I better finish Cobra Kai before the end of the year
There are lots of people that are just going to sub if password sharing stops working. There may be people that stop subbing out of protest but my bets are those people as a percentage are negligible.
Adding the lower cost option with advertising will increase membership that maybe had been shared to others. Time will tell

FYI, whatever password crackdown Netflix does, will be copied by every streaming service just after.
If 10 people password share, crackdown happens, initial subscriber quits Netflix, but two other people they shared with sub, then Netflix wins.
And this WILL happen, because people need their shows. They’re used to coming home and watching the same thing every night. Or seeing what’s new on Netflix nightly. If all they have to do is sub for $15/month and then never think about it again, they will.
And yes, this sub is going to be full of people claiming they’ll protest quit, or only sub for 1 month a year. But for every one of those folks there’s a bajillion boomers and working class folks who will just sub and that’s that.
Because, keep in mind, the people saying in this thread that they’ll quit Netflix if password sharing crackdown happens, also said Netflix wasn’t going to beat earnings or subscribers. My guess is, this subscriber bump is mostly a first wave of people that heard about the coming password share crackdown, and subbed now to avoid interruption.
Will it plummet next year? My guess is that subscriber numbers will stay stagnant or even drop when they start their password sharing crackdown. Netflix in my opinion is barely worth it but they seem desperate to test whether multiple people sharing a single subscription will all buy and keep their own subscriptions. I’m thinking they won’t.
If netflix is available in turkey for 0.50 usd per month, i should be able to buy that. Lets get a law passed and print some fucking puts on netlfix while helping consumers.
