Pension conundrum: Why is it so hard to reform France's retirement system?

France’s pension system is an emotional and divisive issue. Critics say it’s an expensive burden for the French economy, while defenders say it’s a treasured jewel that needs protecting. Attempts to reform it (and there have been many) have driven a cross section of French society into the street and ground the country to a halt. President Emmanuel Macron came to power in 2017 with the promise of streamlining the pension system. Will he now succeed where others have failed?

    It's a ponzi.
Hence the French state hides the amount owed and refuses to tell the young what they are on the hook for.

So all I have to be is an employed and mediocre ballet dancer and I am entitled to a lifetime govt pension..at 40!!!!…might as well entitle strippers…not to mention the increasingly unsustainable health system..the French have been spoiled and living beyond their means…time for another revolution…in austerity .

Pensions should depend on how many children people have. Why should someone who had only one child and spent the extra money on himself or on his child get same pension as someone who has both children working and contributing more to the economy.
You can't have the cake and eat it too.
