Portfolio Report Card: A .9 Million Inherited IRA Built for Someone Else

In this episode of the Portfolio Report Card, Ron DeLegge, Founder @ETFguide analyzes and grades a $1.9 inherited IRA for A.T. in Glendale, AZ. What are the strengths and weakness? And how can she improve?

A.T. is a single, early 50’s do-it-yourself growth investor but her inherited IRA is concentrated in income producing REITs and bonds. She wants to know if she should keep her inherited IRA intact or make changes. She’s also worried about taxes. Does this portfolio pass or fail?

Using his signature Portfolio Report Card analysis, Ron DeLegge examines and grades A.T.’s inherited IRA in key areas like cost, risk, diversification, taxes and performance.

As you’ll see, the chief obstacle with inherited money, besides emotional baggage, is the portfolio was built with the former owner’s goals foremost in mind. And when those goals don’t match the beneficiary’s goals, compatibility issues occur.

What are your portfolio’s strengths and weaknesses? Find out. Get your portfolio analyzed and graded by Ron at PortfolioReportCard.com.

Shouldn't AT build a "10-Year" Portfolio designed to preserve the capital and position her to draw down the account over the next 10 years? She might be able to reduce her taxable income by maximizing her 401K contributions at work. I don't think the answer for her is to build this portion of her portfolio for growth — she needs to build the Inherited IRA for a 10 year withdrawal. Once the funds are in her accounts she can follow her growth plan.

Having lots of room for improvement with a large, tax-deferred(ie minimal trading expense) portfolio is a great problem to have.
Way better than the problem of overoptimized, low-balance that seems all too common.
Also, it is so automatic to want to put non-qualifird dividend payers like REITs in IRAs, but if they are MLPs or something that assumption can be wrong due to their tax optimization strategies with return of capital, and this is probably my #1 failure in research mistake.

    Interesting portfolio. 95% REITS?
Would’ve been advantageous to have stocks this year right?

    Excellent advice Ron.
