Four Reasons Why Sony FX30 May Not be a Real Cinema Camera

In recent years, Sony has gained a significant reputation for producing high-quality cameras that cater to both professional filmmakers and hobbyists. However, despite the company’s success in the cinema camera market, there are some concerns surrounding the Sony FX30 that question its ability to be considered a true cinematic device. Here are four reasons why the Sony FX30 may not be a real cinema camera.

1. Sensor Size:
A significant factor that distinguishes cinema cameras from their consumer counterparts is the sensor size. Cinema cameras typically feature larger sensors that provide better image quality, dynamic range, and low light performance. Unfortunately, the Sony FX30’s relatively small Super35-size sensor falls short in comparison to other cameras in its price range, limiting its cinematic capabilities.

2. Limited High-Resolution Options:
Cinema cameras are expected to offer a range of high-resolution options to meet the demands of various projects. The Sony FX30 disappoints in this aspect by offering a maximum resolution of 4K, while many other cinema cameras in the industry are capable of shooting in 6K or even 8K. This limitation may deter professional filmmakers who rely on higher resolutions for their work.

3. Codec Limitations:
To achieve the best image quality, cinema cameras often provide a plethora of codec options that allow precise control over the footage during post-production. However, the Sony FX30 restricts users to recording only in XAVC, Sony’s proprietary codec. While XAVC is known for delivering good results, the lack of additional codec options restricts filmmakers who prefer alternative codec workflows or greater post-production flexibility.

4. Lack of RAW Recording:
Raw recording is a crucial feature for many professional filmmakers as it provides the highest level of flexibility and control over the final image. Disappointingly, the Sony FX30 does not offer any native raw recording options. While some may argue that raw recording is not essential for all cinematic projects, it is undoubtedly a feature that is expected in a true cinema camera.

Despite these concerns, it is important to note that the Sony FX30 still offers several notable features sought after by filmmakers. Its compact size, reliable autofocus capabilities, and Sony’s renowned color science make it an attractive option for solo filmmakers or those looking for a versatile camera for various shooting scenarios. However, when compared to other cinema camera options on the market, these four limitations suggest that the Sony FX30 may not fulfill the requirements of a true cinema camera.

In conclusion, while the Sony FX30 has its merits, its relatively small sensor size, limited high-resolution options, codec restrictions, and lack of native raw recording capabilities raise doubts about its position as a real cinema camera. Filmmakers seeking a camera specifically designed for cinematographic purposes may find better options elsewhere in the market with more extensive features catered to their professional needs.

I was just looking at the review of the highly rated new film, "The Creator" and director Garth Edwards, who is apparently changing the game by creating a feature iMax level film with a $86M budget. The fact that he shot with multiple Sony FX3 Cinema cameras to achieve this film is puzzling based on your review of it. I have the BMCC 6K Pro with all of the goodies. I am very happy with it as I work towards creating a feature short film. But there's clearly a difference between what I can do with the Super35 format BMCC 6K Pro and full-frame cameras like the Sony FX3 and the new BMCC 6K Full-Frame. What say you? Thanks.

Very true, I have to go to my Sigma fp to see what shutter angle is. I still like my FX30 for what it does. I have to agree, it is not a cinema camera. Subscribed.

Stop buying Red camera products then maybe all the companies may start shipping even the cheapest form of "Raw" in cameras, am just saying. Red as a company is holding the "Raw" codec industry at gunpoint and until Nikon no one has held up well. Anytime someone who uses Red Camera complain about other camera not having something close to it gets me in my high horse.

I love the honestly and passion on display here. Being unafraid to talk major smack about a product is what I look for in a youtuber, and shockingly is hard to find in the video-tech-review space, and I say this as a professional cinematographer and FX30 user – We owe nothing to the brands.

  8. Burgunbeerd

carpenters 100% do care about tool brands haha. If you walked onto a job with a Ryobi drill you'd get laughed at all day

  9. Burgunbeerd

They can't do internal raw because RED has a super vague patent that blocks them. Once RED's patent expires cameras will be so much better

I shoot Z cam and all the people around shoot Sony and tell me Sony is the only way to go. If only they knew there is other options.

  14. Jaime Ortiz

Sony! Please! Please! Bring shutter angle at least! Come on!

Anyways, after I tried the fx6 I was really really dissapointed with the recording formats, the build quality, and Cine EI literally makes no sense to me.

I tried to convince myself by watching all the videos on youtube explaining different reasons why it is so great. But nah, to me it's useless.

Build quality sucks on the fx6. Cheap plastic for a 6k camera? Are you kidding me?

Also the overall design of sony bodies is non inspiring. The fx3 & fx30 have probably the best designs from my perspective, but the rest are meh or quite lame, like the new a6700 looks like a cheap plastic brick. They need to get inspired.

Overall sony cameras are packed with features and are trully great, otherwise they wouln't have gotten so far, but cameras are just cameras, i don't really care about the brand as long as it enables me to materialize my vision and not limit my creativity.

I believe autofocus is the strongest selling point for sony cameras. Because you can learn how to expose even without all the right tools, and how to fix colors even if they aren't ideal, but if the shot is out of focus then you can't fix that, can you?

Finally every camera brand has its flaws, and you gotta choose which one you can live with.

  18. QuantumnBrand

Ok first time here! As someone who uses an fx30 as there A cam, some points were made. Maybe some of these issues can be addressed in an update. Maybe?!?! But Despite its limitations I really do enjoy using this little cam.

Hope you get all your equipment back.

Liked and subscribed, looking forward to hearing more from you!!!

  19. Victorfilm

Justin, I couldn't agree with you more. And sorry to hear about your theft. Unfortunately, it seems it's been happening way too often here in LA. I hope you get it all back.

I like the way you lead from the heart. Keep up the good work!!!

  24. Follow The Focus

I really think that your'e missing the point. Shutter angle is such a none issue. Just create memories for 24/30/60 etc with the correct shutter speed. S&Q mode i have never used, just slow it down in post, it's so easy, especially in Resolve. Ive used the bmpcc6k, bmpcc6k pro and now the fx30 and i think its great. Light, small, amazing autofocus when you want it etc. Thr bmpcc6k pro i also own isnt without its faults.. terrible battery life, no af, big and bulky etc. Crikey, you praise red yet i would never buy one for how they gimp thr market on compressed raw and in their older cameras, making it compulsory to use red storage at massively inflated prices. The fx30 is a good camera and has far better iq than lots of cameras. Yes the bmpcc6k pro has a bettet image yet i leave it behind 70% of the time due to its weight, size etc. Id rather have 90% as good iq and use it most of the time any day.

Sorry about your theft of lights man that sucks so much. It seems like times are tough everywhere, I’m barely finding jobs shooting e-commerce ads sometimes… I picked a hell of a year to start a business in this industry lmao
