As an individual looking towards retirement, owning a 401k is one of the most important investment decisions you can make. A 401k is a retirement savings plan that is offered by employers to their employees. This plan allows employees to contribute a portion of their earnings up to a certain limit, and employers usually contribute to the plan as well. Here are some reasons why you should own a 401k.
Long-term Saving
One of the key benefits of owning a 401k is that it allows you to save money for retirement over a long period of time. When contributing to a 401k, you can choose the percentage of your income to contribute, with a limit of $19,500 if you are under 50 years old and $26,000 for those over 50 years old. With consistent contributions over several years, your funds will grow large enough to support your retirement.
Tax Benefits
Another advantage of owning a 401k is the tax benefits that come with it. Your contributions to a 401k are made pre-tax, which reduces your taxable income. Additionally, any gains made on the investments in a 401k grow tax-deferred until you withdraw the funds. This means that the funds in your 401k can grow more effectively than funds in a taxable account.
Employer Match
Many employers offer to match employee contributions to their 401k plan up to a certain percentage or match level. This can provide a significant boost to your retirement savings by maximizing your contributions. Taking advantage of employer matching allows you to build an even larger nest egg for retirement.
Investment Options
When you own a 401k, you have access to a variety of investment options, including mutual funds, stocks, and bonds. This means that you can tailor your investment portfolio to fit your risk tolerance and investment goals. Most importantly, the investment options available in a 401k are low-cost, which makes it easier to grow your funds without paying too much in fees.
Portability
If you change jobs, the funds in your 401k are fully portable. You can either leave the funds in the former employer’s plan, roll them over into a new employer’s plan, or roll them over into an individual retirement account (IRA). This means that you can continue to grow your retirement savings with your future employer, or choose to invest your funds in an IRA of your choice.
In conclusion, owning a 401k is a smart financial decision if you are looking to secure your financial future. With the added benefits of long-term saving, tax benefits, employer matching, investment options, and portability, it is easy to see why owning a 401k is a popular retirement savings strategy. So, if you have not already done so, consider opening a 401k plan today and start building your retirement savings.
It's silly how people can think a 401k isn't a good idea. If your company matches any of what you contribute it's a no brainer. if they even match half of what you contribute that's an immediate 50% return, dollar for dollar match= 100% return. That's not even taking into account if the market is green. And if investing for the long term your money is going to grow.
I always appreciate the sane, logical takes you present. More flashy clickbait titles and statements will always draw more views, but having real info is so vital. Cheers
Maybe I missed it but did you mention the fact that if your company does a match your investment is doubled at time of investment? What other investments give 100% return at the time of deposit?
That guy saying banks can piss away your money in the stock market really doesn't know how banking works. It's amazing the nonsense people will believe.
Excellent video Sister
I have been in real estate for 20+ years, and it's no longer easy — and often not profitable. Stick with your 401Ks, and put your extra money onto your own mortgage. You won't regret it.
