When it comes to investing in a Roth IRA, it can be overwhelming to decide what to put your money in. However, there are two main types of investments to consider: index funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs).

Index funds are mutual funds that track a specific index, such as the S&P 500. They are a great option for a Roth IRA because they have low fees and allow for diversification across many companies.

ETFs are similar to index funds in that they track an index, but they can be traded like stocks. They also have low fees and can provide diversification.

When researching index funds and ETFs, it’s important to consider the expense ratio, which is the cost of owning the investment. The lower the expense ratio, the better.

It’s also important to research the track record of the specific fund or ETF, including its performance and volatility.

Another factor to consider is the investment philosophy of the fund or ETF. Some may focus on certain types of companies or industries, such as technology or healthcare.

When deciding what to invest in, it’s best to have a balanced portfolio that includes both stocks and bonds. This can help reduce risk while still providing potential for growth.

Overall, investing in index funds and ETFs can be a smart choice for a Roth IRA. With careful research and a diversified portfolio, investors can see long-term growth and success.

I’m in a roboadvisor with Betterment for my Roth IRA but being charged 0.25% for a fee. Looking at a brokerage and will look at doing this myself. Thanks for the video!

Thank you for being one of the few YouTubers to understand mutual funds can be passive index funds. I don't get why that is difficult to remember when all they have to do is look at Vanguard index mutual funds. Key between mutual funds and ETFs is one you can automate purchases and one you can't (similarly with withdrawals). ETF purchases are really automatable using M1 Finance. Otherwise, I favor the mutual funds route since I get that automation… And people talk about expense ratios being cheaper in ETFs, and that is occasionally true, but negligible difference to me most of the time.
