rewrite this title Greek election results as prime minister Mitsotakis hails big win – BBC News

Greece’s conservative prime minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has won national elections, hailing his party’s victory as a “political earthquake”.

But, while his centre-right New Democracy party secured almost 41% of the vote, it is five seats short of a majority.

As a result, instead of forming a coalition government, it could lead to a second election in late June, when the winning party picks up bonus seats.

We greeks had no choice. Either vote the psychopath (Mitsotakis) or the super-liberal immigrant lover Tsipras. Either one evil or the other. We did this to ourselves.

  2. Panos Tz

This is the reason why Greece will never move forward beautiful their people are MALAKES and they vote for the same people

it is not big win it is a fake and illegal win, it is not 41% BBC got it all wrong, not even a small research with the numbers, it is 24% that is against the constitution, same old story with the politics of Greece, bolsheviks rule

  6. greeko25

Why is the bbc inviting a political nobody to comment on Greek election? His party didn’t even make it into parliament? Couldn’t they get someone more relevant?

Among so many Greek people, you choose Varoufakis! Also Varoufakis is not an opponent or rival for Mitsotakis, he is a joke!

  11. DarthTron

He is incredibly corrupted, as well as the whole government. They are very dangerous and I'm afraid we are gonna experience some really shitty situations

  12. Gus Math

Varoufakis’s comparison of Mitsotakis with authoritarian Erdogan is dishonest at best. Can’t BBC find Greek politicians of higher quality to interview? The Greek voters have already figured Varoufakis out and kicked his party out of the Greek parliament.

  13. Ptolemy336VV

I love how Varoufakis mentions mismanagement of pandemic, and everything that isn't in the hands of Mitsotakis. "people have enough of bad news". And yet, war, pandemic, inflation and so on would have had to be dealth by ANY leader all across the world. Would Varoufakis have done better? With everything else he has stood for and dramatically failed, I would say he wouldn't even be quarter of the leader that Mitsotakis is.

Atleast he should kiss Mitsotakis feet for recovering SOMEWHAT from the MAJOR disaster that he created when he was finance minister when dealing with the EU. Greece could literally thank Varoufakis for atleast 100 billion euro extra debt. 1 man, 100 billion debt.

But no. Varoufakis lives in a complete alternate dimension thinking he has even a fraction of the right to condemn Mitsotakis for anything. It is because of Mitsotakis the international markets AND the trust that Varoufakis entirely destroyed, has been somewhat restored.

I wish Varoufakis the next time an even worse outcome, as this current outcome is way above his paygrade and his worth

They are a center/right party, somewhat left of the republican party in the US, but still on the right. Syriza on the other hand, with his unhinged love for illegal immigrants & hatred towards Greeks, is a carbon copy of the democrats.

  15. eisvo21

Guys, the election was rigged because if this guy didn't interfere in it he would go to jail. This guy has never been properly elected even in his party's elections and is supported by the Greek mafia and marinakis that he was caught smuggling drugs and oil from Turkey. This common secret in Greece and they have the worst mafia than any other in the world

  16. Grecoh 073

Biggest corruption in the country's history so far. Every local agrees to this. And they also literally shutted down a right wing political party, and their leader is for the 3d year in prison, without evidence..

  17. George Koroneos

As i said i do believe that mr.mischotakis is much better but i don't have the same feeling about mr.chipras that having the political power could changed things for better !!! I am sorry to say it but this is how i feel , many doesn't agreed with everything & perhaps complain but actually this is the way it is since mr.mishotakis have the majority of the vote , after all this is the whole point of the democracy !!! The only thing now is lets hope that the new government under his leadership will bring in new positive experiences & good things all over the country !!!

  18. Intellectual NinjaMonkey

Mitsotakis just kicked the oppositon a**..
No excuses, we did not vote Kyriakos because there wasn't a better option, we voted him because HE is the best.

  19. Georgios Stroumpoulis

We are you calling Varoufakis? He only represents a 2.5% of the Greek population and the vast majority has very bitter memories from his governance. I do not understand who listens to him anymore

  20. Jaman

This prime minister is like Pablo Escobar …. nobody vote for him but take 2.4m votes HAHAHAHA 1.5million deads votes for Kyriakos Mitsotakis if someone else come up all of this go to jail

  21. theveta

He was a brutal human rights abuser, he did mandates, he defined the "public good" then then enforced it to all. He does not respect the rights of the single citizen but instead makes "groups" of people like the commies do.

  25. George Koroneos

Well…my personal opinion is that mr.michotakis deserves a second term in office & for the following reasons , firstly because is very well educated ,talent & secondly because is a gift organizer & quickly gets things done in the right way & as we see he stands up for the people !!! People are mature & can think much better therefore are convinced that now he will do things even much better because in his first 4 years in goverment have already trained & learned !!! People are not so stupid , can see that he cares & won't give up an inch of his over all gain in progress !!! On the other hand why existed so many political parties in a such so small country ??? Because with so many alternatives that under certain conditions can bring political instability its something that i do not understand it yet !!!

  26. Tlaz

Some facts to help you understand how Greek people think. On 20 February just 10 days before the deadly train disaster happened, some members of the opposition party and the parliament in general, set some safety issues about public transportation and specifically about the safety of trains. The minister of transportation responded "I feel ashamed that you set safety issues, and I can assure you the train system works with the highest safety standards" 10 days later 2 trains crashed frontally and hundreds of young people died. He resigned 2 days later from the ministry. However he was again candidate and the Greek people voted for him bringing him in the 1st place with insane difference from the 2nd in his region just 2 months after this tragic event. As a Greek I feel so embarrassed.

  27. BaN s3R

Greece is doomed. This guy is using illegal software to spy on politicians of othe parties as well as of his own, journalists and everyone that he thinks might go against him. Except for that he uses the national intelligence agency to do the same and controls almost all media. He even spent millions during the pandemic to fund all of those media while he didnt fund the media that he didnt own.

  28. Μαρία Κρικώνη

After the elections I discussed the result with a bunch of people of different occupations, incomes and political ideas. All of the them are so surprised of the result and cannot understand how people voted, especially in the areas which suffered the most the last 4 years. Deathly fires and train accidents, spying scandals, the highest death rate during covid19 period, expensiveness in everything and I can keep going. It’s good for other Europeans to understand the real struggle.

  29. Pant K

He rigged the elections. He is one of the worst prime ministers ever in Greece. There is no way he got 41%. No way

  30. ser vhk

Well he bought the media, his party had around 108 scandals in total with all sorts of bribing doing favors to rich friends but only 3-4 were heard from the media. Also the only economic recovery was for the stock market and the richest the middle and lower classs still suffers from low wages high prices for electricity and buiyng even the most basic things like food water even gas also houses has become way more expensive and he has privatised almost everything so yeah … Economic recovery only for the reachest so i dont see i brighter future for the hellenic republic. But you know what they say many people prefer sweet lies rather than the harsh true (also i dont support in party that is into the parliament)
