Best strategy is to max your 401 contribution that is matched by your employer. Then max a Roth – no Fed taxes, but some states do tax. After that, return to your 401, but it should be a low cost/fee index fund – not in company stock. If not, you are better off buying a taxable low cost/fee index fund. Turnover would be low, so taxes would be minimal. My choice of index funds would be VFINX. Start early and cost average in, buy on dips if you can.
