Series I Savings Bonds, also known as I Bonds, are a type of savings bond issued by the U.S. Department of the Treasury. These bonds offer a unique combination of fixed and inflation-adjusted interest rates, making them an attractive option for investors looking for a safe and secure way to grow their savings.

One of the key decisions that investors have to make when it comes to buying I Bonds is the timing of their purchase. The fixed rate on I Bonds is set for the life of the bond at the time of purchase, but the inflation-adjusted rate is updated every six months, in May and November. This leads to the question: Is it better to buy I Bonds now, in October, or in November?

Buying I Bonds Now:
The fixed rate on I Bonds for the current period (November 2021 to April 2022) is 0.0%, which may not be appealing to some investors. However, the inflation-adjusted rate for I Bonds is currently 1.72%, which is significantly higher than the rates offered by many other savings products. By purchasing I Bonds now, investors can lock in the current inflation-adjusted rate for the next six months, providing a guaranteed return that will keep pace with inflation.

Buying I Bonds in October:
If investors are not satisfied with the current fixed rate on I Bonds, they may choose to wait until October to see if the fixed rate for the next period (May 2022 to October 2022) is more attractive. The downside of this approach is that they will miss out on the current inflation-adjusted rate, which may be higher than the rate offered in the next period.

Buying I Bonds in November:
For investors who are willing to wait, November presents the opportunity to purchase I Bonds with a new fixed rate for the next period. This may be advantageous if the fixed rate in the next period is more favorable than the current rate. However, there is no guarantee that the new fixed rate will be higher, and investors may miss out on the higher inflation-adjusted rate available now.

In conclusion, the decision to buy I Bonds now, in October, or in November ultimately depends on the individual investor’s preferences and expectations. Those seeking the security of a guaranteed return that keeps pace with inflation may find it advantageous to buy I Bonds now and lock in the current inflation-adjusted rate. However, investors who are more focused on the potential for a higher fixed rate in the next period may choose to wait until October or November.

Regardless of when investors choose to buy I Bonds, it’s important to remember that these savings bonds offer a safe and reliable way to grow your savings over time, making them a valuable addition to any investment portfolio.

new CPI-U is out. What do you think for Nov 2022 rates now? 6.47% annual (3.24% semi)?

  8. YouJustGotTrolled101

I see comments where you sort of answered this, but I just want to make sure.

If I buy bonds now, I get the 9.62% until March.

Let's assume November 1st they say the rate is 7%. Do I get that 7% from April to October? Why wouldn't I get the May rates from May to October?

Can you buy an additional 10,000 worth of i bonds every calendar year? Or one year from when you purchased?

  13. aaa zzz

If the I Bond interest rate in April '23 is higher than 9.62, then it'd be better to wait to buy in Nov. than in Oct. With how the current inflation runs, most likely the rate will be higher in Apr..

Does your rate change on your anniversary 6 month date at the current rate? Or does your rate change when the feds change the rate?

  15. Giancarlo S.

If you are predicting 12.4%, it seems it is a no brainer to wait 1 more month. If my math is correct, investing at 9.62% now (October 2nd) guarantees me around 4.81% after 6 months whereas waiting 1 more month guarantees me 5.17% after 5 months (investment on November 1st).

If I can only purchase 10k in I Bonds per year is that calendar year or 12 months? For example I want to buy 10k this month Oct 2022, then can I buy another 10k January 2023 since its the start of a new year or would I have to wait until Oct 2023?

Very good information! I'm very glad I found your channel thanks to Suze Orman's podcast so you are about to get a lot more views. You are so informative and easy to understand. I never knew that you get locked in at the rate you purchase for six months so it makes sense to buy them while it's at 9.62%. I thought you got whatever the rate was changed to at the time it changed it no matter when you purchased your I bond. Thank you!

Great overview and strategic tips. I appreciate your "depends on your situation and perspective" approach. Thank you!

  25. Sherwin Vizcarra

keep in mind — you will need to park your money for 5 years but where else will you get a guaranteed rate of return over 9%?

"I bonds earn interest for 30 years unless you cash them first. You can cash them after one year. But if you cash them before five years, you lose the previous three months of interest. (For example, if you cash an I bond after 18 months, you get the first 15 months of interest.)"

  32. Jeff Larson

I really want to buy an ibond right away but I'm worried that if I try to buy an ibond right now. The IRS might take away my investment money because I owe them money ? The money they say I owe them is being disputed and hasn't been decided on yet. Can they take my investment money away if I try to purchase an ibond ?
