The one thing that’s holding up the growth of Electric Vehicles is batteries. For TESLA, for example, 60 kWh battery, you get a range of 232 miles while the more powerful 85 kWh provides 300 miles. The battery, while powerful, comes for an extra $10,000.

The problem is that even if you have an extra $10,000 to spare, the failure rate is far too high after repeated charging. Also, 300 miles may sound ‘enough’ if you’re driving around the city. But a weekend drive to the Bay Area, assuming you are coming from La, might not even get you to the next interstate.

But, fear not. Samsung is here to save the day.

Early this year, Researchers at the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT) and the Samsung R&D Institute Japan (SRJ), discovered that lithium is what’s causing the short circuit during charging.

So, the Researchers replaced it with a silver-carbon layer.

The pouch that the team created would give an EV a range of about 500 miles and have a life cycle of more than 1000 recharges. That’s a vehicle with a battery that lasts 500,000 miles.

Plus, the battery pack created during the research was 50 percent smaller than a conventional lithium-ion battery. Imagine how powerful it will be once scaled up.

It might still take years before it finds its way to the market.
