Medifintech, a leading healthcare technology company, recently conducted a webinar titled “NHS Pension Update” on 26th October 2023. The webinar aimed to provide healthcare professionals with the latest updates and insights regarding their NHS pension scheme.
The NHS Pension Scheme is one of the most important components of an NHS employee’s overall benefits package. It provides a secure and comprehensive retirement plan, ensuring that healthcare professionals are adequately supported financially during their post-work years. However, the complexity of the scheme and continuous changes in legislation often pose challenges for individuals to fully understand and maximize their pension benefits.
Recognizing this need, Medifintech organized the webinar as a platform to educate NHS employees about the latest developments in the pension scheme and to address any queries or concerns they may have. The event was open to all healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, and administrative staff, who are members of the NHS pension scheme.

These specialists provided an overview of the NHS pension scheme, explaining its key features, eligibility criteria, and the various benefit options available to participants. They also discussed recent updates and changes to the scheme as per the most up-to-date legislation.
One of the main focuses of the webinar was to address the impact of recent changes in pension taxation rules on NHS employees. These changes have caused significant concerns among healthcare professionals, as many have been affected by tax charges and have faced difficulties in optimizing their pension benefits without incurring additional taxation burdens.
During the webinar, the experts from Medifintech presented strategies and tips to help professionals navigate through these challenges. They discussed techniques for managing pension tax liability, including effective financial planning, optimizing contribution levels, and considering alternative investment options. Attendees were also provided with resources and tools to help them make informed decisions about their pension contributions and retirement planning.

UPDATE: A consultation has been launched by government that proposes the abolition of abatement for Special Class status.

There are also proposals to remove salary sacrifice as part of the mechanism to reduce pensionable pay to meet the criteria of 10% pensionable pay reduction.
Clarification on 'Calculating pensionable pay' slide: Originally the slide was based on retiring on 1st April to show how pensionable pay is calculated by using periods of active pay. We then had a great question about how Pension Increase Factors can be applied, so we showed an example by applying the Pension Increase Order 2022 to the calculation, which came into effect on 11th April 2022 and the slide was meant to be updated to reflect that – apologies this was missed.
Thanks for watching
Best wishes, Graham
