The Italian Wars, which took place from 1494 to 1559, saw the involvement of Swiss mercenaries in the conflicts between the European powers. The Swiss were renowned for their fierce fighting skills and were hired as mercenaries by various European powers. Their legendary skill in combat made them highly sought after by various warring factions.

One of the most prominent conflicts in which the Swiss mercenaries played a significant role was the Burgundian Wars. The conflict between the Swiss and the Duchy of Burgundy culminated in the Battle of Nancy in 1477, where the Swiss forces decisively defeated the Burgundian army, leading to the death of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy. This victory solidified the reputation of the Swiss warriors as formidable fighters in European warfare.

Following their success in the Italian and Burgundian Wars, the Swiss soldiers gained recognition for their military prowess and were often in high demand. As a result, many Swiss warriors found employment in the Pope’s service as members of the Swiss Guard.

The Swiss Guard was established in 1506 and is responsible for protecting the Pope and the Vatican. The guards are known for their distinctive Renaissance-era uniforms and are considered one of the oldest standing military units in the world. The Swiss Guard continues to serve as the protective force for the Vatican, carrying on the legacy of their predecessors who fought in the Italian and Burgundian Wars.

Today, the Swiss Guard is a symbol of Swiss military excellence and continues to serve as a testament to the skill and dedication of the Swiss warriors. Their legacy from the Italian and Burgundian Wars has been passed down through generations, and they remain a revered and respected force in the modern world.

Papal guard to me is cooler than US secret service for the president. There is just so much history you would be a part of and just imagine all the things you would see such as the Vatican archives for example

there is a famous swiss saying that goes:

    in Grandson das Gut
    In Murten den Mut
    In Nancy das Blut

Meaning, in grandson the goods, in murten the bravery and in nancy the blood. it refers to the three big battles that the swiss won against the burgundians. after grandson they managed to conquer the cannons and supplies of the burgundians (the goods), in Murten, the burgundians fled into the lake and many of them drowned (because they lost their bravery) and in nancy, it ended with the blood of the burgundian lord.

it's a very proud time in swiss history, when the small cantons finally started helping eachother and supporting eachother against the theoretically much more powerful neighbours.

What if they renamed PoV (Paladins of Vatican)? Because Switzerland itself no longer needs them?

Let's be clear: The papal guard isn't based on any official mandate between the Pope and Switzerland and the members are there on their own will. Personally I believe the papal guard should be dissolved asap! The catholic church isn't anything that I would protect, not as a person nor for what he stands for.
