SLAT, or spousal lifetime access trusts, are irrevocable trusts that one spouse creates for the benefit of his or her family. Often, they are used to allow limited access for the trustee to make distributions to the spouse. These can be a good way of utilizing the large gift exclusion without a transfer tax. However, downfalls include death of a spouse or divorce.
