Index funds have gained significant popularity among investors over the years due to their simplicity and convenience. They offer a diversified portfolio and long-term stability, making them an ideal choice for those looking to invest for life. Here are the five best index funds to consider for lifelong investing.
1. Vanguard Total Stock Market Index Fund (VTSMX): This fund aims to track the performance of the entire U.S. equity market. It provides exposure to over 3,000 stocks, including large, mid, and small-cap companies. VTSMX offers broad market diversification, low expense ratios, and excellent long-term returns.
2. Schwab U.S. Broad Market ETF (SCHB): SCHB is an enticing option for lifelong investments due to its low expense ratio and broad market exposure. It tracks the Dow Jones U.S. Broad Stock Market Index, providing investors with access to large, mid, small-cap companies across various sectors.
3. iShares Core S&P 500 ETF (IVV): As one of the most popular index funds, IVV tracks the performance of the S&P 500 index, representing 500 leading companies in the U.S. With a low expense ratio and consistent returns, this fund offers exposure to some of the largest and most successful companies in America.
4. Fidelity ZERO Total Market Index Fund (FZROX): Launched in 2018, FZROX has quickly gained attention for its zero expense ratio. This fund aims to replicate the performance of the total U.S. stock market and includes companies of all sizes. Fidelity’s expertise and commitment to providing cost-effective investment options make FZROX an attractive long-term investment choice.
5. Vanguard Total International Stock Index Fund (VGTSX): It’s crucial not to overlook the international market when building a lifelong investment portfolio. VGTSX provides access to thousands of companies across developed and emerging markets outside of the U.S. This fund offers investors diversification and exposure to global growth opportunities.
Investing for life requires a long-term perspective and a focus on diversified portfolios. These five index funds encompass a wide range of investments, covering both domestic and international markets, providing investors with potential growth and stability. Remember, it’s crucial to conduct thorough research and consult with a financial advisor to align your investment choices with your specific needs and goals.

Given the current economic difficulties that the country is experiencing in 2023, how can we enhance our earnings during this period of adjustment? I cannot let my $680k savings vanish after putting in so much effort to accumulate them.
So far, as I learn and understand the basics of investing, I’ve found Herman Jonas to be of great help to me in my investment journey.
><Insightful video. I just want to know best how people split their pay, how much of it goes into savings, spending or investments. I'm 27, and earn nothing less ($150k ) per year, but nothing to show for it yet<.
Awesome. Thank you
Does VQNPX have an etf equivalent?
VTI is the total US stock market, not the total global stock market btw
TEAM SPYDER. Until the fed gives up on the American economy, it will always outpace inflation over time. Spider-Man was always my favorite hero anyway 🙂
Good advice but any reason why all the recommended funds are US based? No UK, Europe, Japan, emerging markets?
I have 2 kids that i want to switch from etrade so they can get partial stocks. They don't have money to open vanguard but do you like fidelity?
I've had Fidelity as my platform for many years. I did individual tests by investing in identical holdings but on different platforms, to compare returns over time. I found that Fidelity accounts did better than either Vanguard or Merrill Edge. I could not discover why, but simply went with the results as an empirical indicator. I have FNILX, FZROX, FBIOX and many other Fidelity products.
I have many monthly dividend ETFs, and also prefer FDVV's performance to either VTI or SCHD.
Good list! I do own three off that list VVIAX, VFIAX, and VTI. My top ETF performer was not on the list VGT, but that one is higher risk.
You need to be careful to think about having a broad investing plan in situations like these. Your portfolio need to be exposed to several market segments, such as small- and large-cap ETF indexes, foreign equities, investment-grade bonds, and alternative investments like the foreign exchange market (forex & digital-ledger) I reached the seven figure barrier by diversifying my portfolio's exposure to the market. Thanks to James Fletcher Brennan, my mentor, there has been constant progress.
in such times as this, you’ve got to make sure you consider having a diverse investment strategy. Your portfolio should have exposure to different areas of the market, including small or large-caps of ETF index, international stocks, grade bonds and alternatives like currency market (forex & digital-ledger) I grew to a 7 figure mark with my portfolio having exposure to different areas of the market Credits to my adviser, James Fletcher Brennan..it's been steady growth.
What about VWRL?
9:16 – I believe you meant to say 10.55%. You showed that amount buy you read "10.72%".
Interesting , the stock market is currently experiencing a decline while bond yields are on the rise. However, there seems to be skepticism amongst investors regarding the Federal Reserve's plan to continue increasing interest rates until inflation is stabilized. As for myself, I find myself at a crossroads, uncertain whether to liquidate my $250,000 stock portfolio. I'm seeking advice on the best strategy to capitalize on this current bear market.
There are a lot of strategies to make tongue-wetting profit that the average joes don't know. . Personally, the financial-market for me seems the only way forward with my long time horizon (accrued roughly $457k in gains since Mid 2021 ) but if you don’t have that fortune of time it’s a tough market out there almost nowhere feels safe!
Hell yeah baby, thanks for the informative video. I will remember you when I’m in my 40s
