Saving for retirement is an important aspect of financial planning, and one of the most popular ways to save for retirement is through a 401(k) plan. These employer-sponsored retirement plans allow individuals to contribute a portion of their pre-tax income towards their retirement savings, with some employers even offering matching contributions.
One key aspect of a successful retirement savings plan is to start saving early. The earlier you start saving, the more time your money has to grow through compound interest. For 30-year-olds who are just starting to save for retirement, it’s important to have an idea of what an average 401(k) balance might look like at this age.
In 2024, the average 401(k) balance for a 30-year-old is around $31,547, according to data from Fidelity Investments. This might seem like a decent amount, but it’s important to remember that this is just an average and individual circumstances will vary.
There are several factors that can influence a 30-year-old’s 401(k) balance, including their salary, contribution rate, investment choices, employer contributions, and market performance. It’s important for individuals to regularly review and adjust their retirement savings strategy to ensure they are on track to meet their financial goals.
For 30-year-olds looking to boost their 401(k) balance, there are a few key strategies to consider. First, increasing your contribution rate can help accelerate your retirement savings. Even small increases in your contribution rate can have a big impact over time.
Second, diversifying your investment choices can help protect your savings from market fluctuations. By spreading your investments across different asset classes, you can reduce risk and potentially increase returns.
Finally, taking advantage of employer matching contributions can significantly boost your 401(k) balance. If your employer offers a match, be sure to contribute enough to maximize this benefit.
Overall, the average 401(k) balance for a 30-year-old in 2024 is just a starting point. With careful planning, smart investment decisions, and consistent contributions, individuals can work towards building a robust retirement savings nest egg that will enable them to retire comfortably in the future.
What if you have a pension? How can I compare myself to other people my age with a pension?
Depending on your income, 12% may be good. For me, a fully funded Roth IRA, plus 12% in my 401k, is enough to reach 25%.
Just hit it at 56k between a Roth 457 and Roth IRA at 29yrs old. 2 kids at home and “surviving” lol been trying to keep a 15%-17% savings rate
I'd appreciate both Average and Median on these. Some bozos with wild incomes might be steering the conversation in a different direction.
