Trading stocks in a self directed 401k account

You opened up your brand new self-directed 401k plan, you’re going out there and you’re buying real estate you got some rental properties in there, but you’re missing the excitement of the stock market. Can you still have a brokerage account inside your self-directed 401k. Simple answer is Yes and it’s relatively easy to do. This is what you need to do you, contact the brokerage firm of your choice and I know for a fact that TD ameritrade and schwab and fidelity allow this and you tell them, hey brokerage firm of my choice, I want to open up a brokerage account for my self-directed 401k and this is very important. You tell them you have your own plan documents because otherwise they’re gonna say okay sign all these documents and you’re going to be signing up for a brand-new 401k plan it is going to be rigid and isn’t going to allow you to have self-directed control. So, what you do is you go to the brokerage firm tell the brokerage firm that you have your own retirement plan documents, they’re now going to have you set up a special type of account of which they have no control over, no say over they can’t they don’t file any tax or reports or returns or anything that’s all up to you. Remember it’s self-directed 401k plan so now they give you this no-frills account if you will and now you can move money from your checking account or wherever have your self-directed 401k over to the brokerage firm and now you’re free to lose as much money as you possibly want to inside the stock market playing options or whatever. So, Once again can your self-directed 401k plan set up a brokerage account ? absolutely. But the key is to open up an account and you tell them, you have your own plan documents. if you have any questions on this or need some further help by all means give us a call so just an Email. We’re here to help you…(read more)

Hello Tim – did I hear you say you can trade options in the Solo 401 K? What about warrants…any issues with those? All is fair? Thanks! I previously thought that options had an issue with UBIT.

Hi Tim, I have a self-directed 401k and opened a trading account at Fidelity by telling them I had my own plan documents, but the account was not named for my 401K, it is named in my husband's and my names (we're both managers of our business the 401k is attached to) and is a WROS account. I moved the money into the Fidelity account directly from my 401k checking account. Someone told me that, because I didn't name the account my 401k's name, the money I moved there should be counted as a distribution in the year I moved it. Is this correct? Thanks for your help!
