President Joe Biden has said the US will do “whatever is needed” to shore up the banking system. This comes after two American banks collapsed in less than 48 hours. Is the US under threat of another major financial crisis? Palki Sharma tells you more.

Sports presenter Gary Lineker will be back on air after the BBC pulled him last week for criticising the country’s new migration law. What is the controversy all about and can the BBC lecture other nations on impartiality? Palki Sharma explains.

America’s Biggest Bank Failures

The United States has experienced several devastating bank failures throughout its history, but none were as widespread or as damaging as the Great Recession of 2008. The financial crisis was precipitated by the subprime mortgage crisis, which caused widespread defaults on home loans and other types of debt.

The failures of large financial institutions like Lehman Brothers and Bear Stearns were among the most visible during the crisis, but the list of failed banks was extensive. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) has recorded over 500 bank failures since 2000.

One of the most significant bank failures in American history was the 1933 collapse of Bank of United States. The bank was the largest in the country at the time and had branches across the country. It failed due to fraud and mismanagement and took down over 300,000 depositors with it. It was a huge blow to the country’s financial system, leading to the creation of the FDIC to protect depositors from future failures.

Another significant failure during the Great Depression was that of the First National Bank of Boston in 1931. It was the largest bank in New England and failed after a run-on-the-bank, causing many people to lose their life savings.

More recently, the 2008 financial crisis saw the failures of several large institutions. The collapse of Lehman Brothers in September of that year was perhaps the most notable, causing a ripple effect throughout the financial world as it was the first time a major investment bank had failed since the Great Depression.

Other major failures during the crisis included Washington Mutual, which had over $300 billion in assets, and IndyMac Bank, which was the largest savings and loan in the Western United States.

In total, over 200 banks failed during the Great Recession, leading to widespread economic pain and hardship for many Americans. Regulators and lawmakers responded by enacting sweeping reforms, such as the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act.

BBC Reaches Deal With Gary Lineker

The BBC has reached a new deal with one of its most high-profile presenters, Gary Lineker. The former England footballer will continue to host Match of the Day, the BBC’s flagship football highlights program, for the next five years.

Lineker has been a mainstay of UK television for decades, having first risen to prominence as a Golden Boot-winning forward for Tottenham Hotspur and the England national team. He transitioned to broadcasting in the 1990s and has been with the BBC since 1999.

The new deal is reportedly worth £1.2 million per year, making Lineker one of the highest-paid presenters at the BBC. His salary has drawn criticism in the past, particularly from those who feel that public sector salaries should be more modest.

However, Lineker has defended his salary in the past, noting that he takes a pay cut to present Match of the Day due to his passion for the sport and for the program itself. He also donates a portion of his salary to charity, including supporting refugees.

Lineker’s new deal also includes hosting coverage of major sporting events, such as the Euros and World Cup.

If regional/smaller banks lose money as people move to GSIBs (Global Systemic Important Bank) because the larger banks insure 100% deposits, and we end up with 4 of 5 SIBs could their terms of service could include digital Banking?
