Bottom line guys: The G fund IS a tasty free lunch and if the G fund is ever "down scaled" into a pathetic 4-week Treasury, it'll be time to move 100% of your TSP to a rollover IRA the minute you turn 59.5 years of age. The G fund is the only reason to keep your money in the TSP after you turn 59.5 years of age (all of the C, S, I, and F funds' equivalents are easily duplicated even more cheaply at any of top 3 or 4 mutual fund companies).
The new G fund date posted to the TSP website every 1st or 2nd of the month appears to very closely approximate the "rolling average" rate of the 10-year Treasury.
That comment means the G fund is the ONLY investment on earth that is entirely risk-free.
I Bonds are affected by the inflation rate. Would be nice if the GFund followed that
da Bulls!
