Lack of efficacy. I think most of us have trained our eyes to completely ignore online ads. Especially on our phones.
It was all bullshit from the beginning. Companies are realizing that they are being charged for ads and clicks to and from fake accounts that target no one.
Apple
I work in digital advertising.
Meta started dying after Cambridge analytica. They made targeting far more general which led to significantly worse returns.
Google is declining for largely the same reason. They force you to use more general targeting so you have to buy more clicks in order to get the same sales numbers. This of course decreases the return which reduces the Google’s traditional advantage over other advertising methods. This started about 3 years ago and has just been a slow crawl to mediocrity ever since then.

Do Facebook and Google report the breakdown of ad revenue by type of businesses buying ads there? Not all ad dollars are same.
When Facebook became a cesspool of conspiracy theories and racist uncles, no companies wanted to associate with it anymore. Twitter is doing the same thing now with Musk.

Some might disagree with this hypothesis, but I posit it was Norm Macdonald’s promotion of the Man-grate. Best ad reads of all time, yet you never hear about the “best thing to happen to grilling” anymore.
RIP Norm.
Nobody clicks on those adds. Total waste of money by the advertisers and they’re figuring this out.
The recession killed the social media boom. You also have people shifting their social media tastes to new media. There also people that just don’t care anymore about social media. It’s a matter of how much time do you have to waste? Is socially media actually benefitting my life? Besides getting useful information from some reddit forums. I’ve never gotten anything useful from other social media. Twitter is full of scams and people selling services. Snapchat and Kik are full of scams. I’m being constantly bombarded with scams on social media. Then I stop using those accounts. Then eventually delete those accounts.
