Gratuity is a form of monetary benefit received by an employee from their employer upon retirement or resignation. It is a lump sum payment made as a token of appreciation for the employee’s years of service to the company. The amount of gratuity received by an employee is dependent on various factors such as the number of years worked for the company and the last drawn salary.

In India, the gratuity amount is calculated based on the formula of 15 days of salary for every completed year of service. The calculation is done as follows:

Gratuity = Last drawn salary (basic salary + dearness allowance) x Number of completed years of service x 15 / 26

For example, if an employee has worked for a company for 10 years and their last drawn salary was Rs. 50,000 per month, then the calculation would be as follows:

Gratuity = Rs. 50,000 x 10 x 15 / 26 = Rs. 2,88,461.54

It is important to note that the maximum amount of gratuity payable as per the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972 is Rs. 20 lakhs. Any amount above this is considered ex-gratia and not mandatory for the employer to pay.

In addition to gratuity, employees also receive a pension after retirement. Pension is a regular monthly payment received by retired employees as income security during their post-retirement years. The amount of pension received is determined by various factors such as the number of years worked, the average salary during the last few years of service, and the pension scheme opted for by the employee.

Employees covered under the Employees’ Pension Scheme of the Employee’s Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) are eligible to receive a pension after retirement. The pension amount is calculated based on a formula that takes into account the employee’s years of service and average monthly salary during the last 12 months of service.

Employees can apply for their pension after retirement by submitting a pension application form along with relevant documents such as proof of age, proof of service, and bank account details.

In conclusion, gratuity and pension are important financial benefits that employees receive after retirement for their years of service to the company. It is essential for employees to understand the calculation and eligibility criteria for these benefits to ensure they receive their rightful dues upon retirement. It is always recommended to consult with a financial advisor or HR department for more information on gratuity and pension benefits.
