Psychologist Julia Pascual tells us about Narcissists in Therapy

Narcissistic personality disorder is a complex and challenging condition to treat, especially when the individual in question is resistant to therapy. Psychologist Julia Pascual, who has significant experience working with individuals with narcissistic traits, shares her insights on how narcissists behave in therapy.

According to Pascual, narcissists often present a unique set of challenges in therapy due to their grandiose sense of self, lack of empathy, and tendency to manipulate others. They may struggle to acknowledge their own shortcomings, resist taking responsibility for their actions, and struggle with self-reflection.

In therapy, narcissists may initially present themselves as charming, charismatic, and confident individuals. They may seek validation and admiration from their therapist, using their charm to disguise their underlying insecurities and vulnerabilities. However, as therapy progresses, their true colors may begin to emerge.

Pascual explains that narcissists may exhibit behaviors such as gaslighting, manipulating, deflecting blame onto others, and refusing to take responsibility for their actions. They may also struggle with forming genuine connections with others, as their primary focus is on maintaining their own sense of superiority and control.

Despite these challenges, Pascual emphasizes that therapy can be beneficial for individuals with narcissistic traits. Through therapy, narcissists may learn to develop greater self-awareness, empathy, and insight into their own behavior. They may also learn healthier coping mechanisms and strategies for managing their relationships with others.

Pascual also highlights the importance of establishing clear boundaries and expectations in therapy when working with narcissistic individuals. It is crucial for the therapist to maintain a sense of neutrality, objectivity, and firmness in order to navigate the complexities of the therapeutic relationship effectively.

Overall, working with narcissistic individuals in therapy requires patience, empathy, and a deep understanding of the underlying dynamics at play. By creating a safe and supportive environment, therapists like Julia Pascual can help narcissistic individuals embark on a journey of self-discovery and growth, leading to greater psychological well-being and improved relationships with themselves and others.
