Lord Mountbatten, a key figure in British royal and military circles, was assassinated by the Irish Republican Army (IRA) on August 27, 1979. This tragic event has been dramatized in the hit Netflix series, The Crown, with Olivia Colman playing Queen Elizabeth II and Charles Dance portraying Lord Mountbatten.

Lord Mountbatten, also known as Louis Mountbatten, was a cousin of the Queen and a highly respected member of the British establishment. He served as the last viceroy of India and was instrumental in the negotiation of India’s independence in 1947. He also held various high-ranking positions in the Royal Navy and played a key role in shaping the British military strategy during World War II.

On that fateful day in August, Lord Mountbatten was vacationing with his family in his summer home in Mullaghmore, Ireland. The IRA, a paramilitary organization seeking the reunification of Ireland and the removal of British influence, had been planning his assassination for months. They detonated a bomb on his fishing boat, killing him, his grandson, and a family friend.

The assassination of Lord Mountbatten sent shockwaves through the British establishment and further escalated tensions between the British government and the IRA. In response to the assassination, British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher vowed to crack down on the IRA and intensify security measures in Northern Ireland.

The Crown, a critically acclaimed series that chronicles the reign of Queen Elizabeth II, devoted an episode to the assassination of Lord Mountbatten in its fourth season. Olivia Colman, who portrays the Queen in this season, captures the grief and shock that the monarch felt upon learning of her cousin’s death. Charles Dance’s portrayal of Lord Mountbatten is poignant and moving, showcasing the man’s charisma and dedication to his country.

The assassination of Lord Mountbatten remains a dark chapter in British-Irish history and serves as a reminder of the deep-rooted political and sectarian tensions in Northern Ireland. The events surrounding his death have had a lasting impact on both countries and continue to shape their relationship to this day.

In commemorating the memory of Lord Mountbatten, we pay tribute to a man who dedicated his life to serving his country and upholding its values. The Crown’s portrayal of this tragic event serves as a poignant reminder of the human cost of political violence and the need for reconciliation and peace.

I served with the 3rd battalion ppcli and had the pleasure of meeting lord Mountbatten’s daughter who at that time was colonel-in-chief of the ppcli. The countess Mountbatten of Burma. Seemed like a very stoic and interesting lady. Called her face scars her IRA facelift.
